A bachelor buddy, age about 58, lives in northern Miinnesota. In the past several years he has taken an interest in clothes and wears jacket and tie to work in a capacity in which he deals with the public.

I think he has enough, if one can ever have enough, pants, shirts, jackets and hats. The snow isn't ideal for nice shoes.

Anything else sartorial leap to mind?

Alternatively, what would you be tickled to find under the tree with your name on it?

You mentioned the weather being hard on footwear. A classy pair of rubber wellingtons would be nice. Might not be the greatest for the dead of winter, but during those rainy and slushy times, I have gotten good service out of mine.

....or a nice pair of overshoes/boots would be a useful gift for a Minnesota resident. I got a lot of use out of mine, during several of Chicago's cold, blustery, slushy winters.

As for what I would like to find under my Christmas Tree, it would be one of Colonel Littleton's handcrafted Cherry wood lap desks. As I age it becomes increasing difficult to come up with anything I want for Christmas. The real joy comes from watching the wife, kids and grand kids opening their gifts on Christmas morning or afternoon, whichever the case might be! If your friend is alone, the best gift of all might be to invite him over to spend the holiday with you and yours. ;)

This is so true. I feel a little stupid getting gifts at 55 when we do the family Christmas thing with my girlfriend's family. But I really enjoy how much the kids (even the ones going to college, as most still need/want a bunch of stuff) get excited when they get something.

For us - my girlfriend and me - it's getting together with everyone once a year (I just have my mother - no other family - and my girlfriend's family is spread pretty far) that is special about Christmas.

That said, when we get home, my girlfriend and I exchange a few stocking stuffers (inexpensive gifts) that is a lot of fun because the "challenge" is finding a few things we think the other will enjoy and be surprised with that don't cost a lot. Plus there's usually boozy eggnog involved.

It isn't easy to choose a Christmas gift for someone who probably has almost everything. In such cases, a collector's alcohol or cigars will be the best gift. However, I haven't picked up gifts for adult men for a long time. I usually buy gifts for my nephews, and they are still quite crumbs. And it's enough for me to order everything on BOPTO, and I'm always sure these will be great gifts. It's good to know the hobbies of someone who needs to make a gift. Then it's easier to pick up something really interesting.
