I generally need a 15.5 collar in order to fit across my shoulders, but this can leave a ton of fabric down around my waist. So I've taken a few shirts to a tailor to have them narrowed.

But on a couple shirts this had resulted in the chest pocket moving way over to the side, almost under my armpit! I guess this is because the tailor is removing all the extra fabric from the side seam area of the shirt.

I'm wondering if tailors ever narrow a shirt by removing the placket and taking out some fabric there, too? Wouldn't that prevent the narrowing of the shirt from also shifting the pocket way over to the side? Is that a reasonable request to make?

More of an add on than a solution...

I have a 16.5 inch neck and a 40 inch chest so otr shirts look boxy and balloon around the waist. My experience has been that when I have shirts narrowed that have a pocket, the pocket seems to be too large for the shirt and my chest.

"A Tailor" can you help?

not being a shirt maker, i am not sure that the placket can be moved. i think you must ask alexander k. that question.

if the shirt has been used stitch marks may show if the pocket is removed. if its new and unused this may not happen. in that case then the pocket may be made smaller, or left off entirely.

The pocket needs to stay where it is away from the placket so it doesn't peep out when you wear a jacket. That's one thing I can't stand, so I never wear a shirt without a pocket. If the shirt is new, removing the pocket is the best all-around solution. Or you could also get shirts without pockets, but sometimes those can be hard to find in the US. Look into shirts from the UK for those.

Hmm, yes I've noticed that also. Sometimes the pocket looks very large on the shirt. But I'm not certain whether that is due to the shirt's having been narrowed, or simply the original design of the shirt.

That's really a good question. Look at the shirt and you can see that the placket attaches to the collar. You would have to detach the collar, do the alteration and reattach the collar. That's in addition to taking material off the side. Can you imagine how much money that would cost. You could get custom shirts for less that would fit better. Sometimes, MTM or custom really are less expensive. Good luck
