Century 21 stores closing

On September 10 sad news for those who are in NY metro area was announced - Century 21 stores are going out of business. Another victim of Covid pandemic. This particularly upsetting, I've been going to that store for years!!!

Their offerings were a mixed bag, but one could find some gems in their stores - Kiton, Zegna, Armani, Hickey Freeman, Allen Edmonds, Bruno Magli, Brioni and countless other quality makers...

They've been in business since 1960.

RIP!

I think we Tri-state AAAC members will be plunged into a pit of despair. Though at least I won't have to walk aimlessly around the Westbury store while my mother indulges her appetite for American bargains.

Thinking back on it, though, there was very little I ever bought there. $40 Lanvin ties, a sevenfold Bulgari tie for a similar price, a Polo shirt or two. I miss Syms far more.
I feel like our in person shopping options are getting extremely limited. Here are just some fun stores we lost - Syms, Today's Man, Brooks Brothers, Feline's Basement, Daffy's, Lord & Taylor, Century 21 and others are gone for good. These were not exclusively high end stores, but shopping these was fun and I loved going there occasionally to hunt for exciting finds.

After we are through with Covid, what will we have left in NY to shop in person? Jos A Bank (all their nice deals are online anyway), Charles Tyrwhitt (tiny place), Men's Wearhouse (I hope I don;t have to go back there). That's it!

It looks like in person shopping is dead and the future is Amazon.
As I've said many times before, to a certain extent, there will always be a market for bespoke and made to measure dress wear and formal wear in person as well as other bespoke clothing and shoes in person. But it will always be a specialty (or niche) market from 2001 onward and it will never again be anywhere near what it was from 2000 and prior.
I knew this change would happen eventually, I just hoped that it would take longer. Our lives transform at such a rapid pace!
