I voted to give it to someone else, but I'm surprised you didn't include the most obvious option, returning it for the correct size, in your survey.

The person who gave me the gift purchased it in Denmark, where they live. They are still here on a family visit but I would prefer not to tell them about the size.

I can see that. Asking them to return and replace it would be a burdensome request.
