I'm finding that my Top Siders and Converse gym shoes are becoming terribly uncomfortable for my 70-year-old feet. Can anyone recommend a brand that I might like better? I prefer a boat shoe style but will accept any canvas shoe, whether tie up or slip-ons. My on-line reach so far points me to SeaVee's.

I will only wear them for appropriate occasions, so you don't have to worry about leading me to sin.

Ages ago, for many years I would buy a new pair of navy canvas Topsiders each summer and beat the heck out of them.

These look similar, though the model name is different. They also look as if they may be a little more substantial, if that helps. If you need a softer footbed consider a thin Poron insole to aid your aching tootsies

Bean has a nice looking slip-on, though they look to be some kind of mesh, rather than canvas.

I find PF Flyers a bit more comfortable than Converse for canvas shoes. This may be a case for orthopedic inserts, however, more than a particular shoe design.

So, I got another pair of TopSiders and took out the insoles and replaced them with a thinner, stiffer one from an old pair of shoes that I had on hand.

So far, I might have hit the jackpot. They were pretty comfortable for the short time that I wore them.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

Aloha!

Timely thread. I recently bought two pairs of Converse Chuck Taylor because many of my friends are wearing them. I never thought I'd see them come back into style. And there was a note on the website that I bought them from. It said, "NOT FOR WALKING OR RUNNING". Yet I bought them anyway.

I had to put in sole inserts for cushioning. With that, they are not too bad. But still not comfortable for every day - all day wear.

I find that Puma are comfortable for me for daily wear. This being said, shoes are like favorite foods. No two people may agree on what style or brand is the best because it is very subjective.

I bought a pair of Novesta Star Masters a while back and never regretted buying them. The are reasonable in price, come in great colors, and are very comfortable. I cannot recommend them enough. Simply canvas shoe...

The Chuck 70 and CX have more support and are built more substantially than the base Chuck.

I'm a fan of minimalist shoes (zero-drop toe/heel differential, wide toe box, minimal cushioning to allow ground feel). Xero shoes are awesome, but styling is limited. These Sanuk Rounders work for me.

I only wear Vivobarefoot. They are totally flat. They make me feel stable and connected to the ground. Walking in Vivobarefoot is different than walking in any other shoes. It takes practice to learn how to walk in them, but it's worth the effort.

When I started practicing tai chi nearly twenty years ago, I had a lot of trouble with shoes that prevented me from moving through the exercise correctly. Typical shoes are cushioned and prevent feeling the ground under the foot. Tai chi teaches balance and pivoting when turning, thus preventing falls. I tried Vivobarefoot shoes a few years later and they helped me move through the tai chi exercise easily.

When I started wearing Vivobarefoot, I wore them hiking on rocky trails and the rocks did not bother me. Previously I stumbled if I stepped on a rock and stepping on the rock was painful even though my hiking boots were cushioned, but when wearing vivobarefoot, my foot would bend to match the shape of the rock and I moved smoothly across the rock just as easily as walking on flat earth.

I've not worn any other shoes since I found Vivobarefoot. I've even worn them to white tie and tails events.

I needed to buy them in a larger size after having worn them for a few years, because they change the shape of the foot. I buy them on their website, and determining shoe size can be done on their website.

As regards Topsiders and Converse, there are options within those choices. I found all Topsiders other than Gold Cup uncomfortable. I love both the Gold Cup original and billfish. I found Chucks incompatible with my vintage feet but am quite pleased with Jack Purcells.
