Hi guys, I've enjoyed these forums immensely and am posting for the first time.
I've always been devoted to the trad/preppy/Ivy League look, but for the past few years I've been seduced by some looks I think of as English--spread collar, French cuffed shirts with bold checks, jackets with side vents, etc. I've been wearing 3-button suits with a higher button stance, waist suppression, and pleated trousers, which also seem a bit English.
Anyway, after reading through the trad topic, I was overcome by nostalgia for the traditional American look, and ran to Brooks Brothers to pick up their classic 3-button (top rolled into lapel, undarted, plain-front sack suits in gray and navy. (none to be found at the 5th Ave store here in NYC--they had to send me to 44th and Madison, where the salesman told me no one ever asks for them anymore! ) I am in love with them and am busting out the repp ties, etc. and having a blast.
My question: Can I wear my beautiful English shirts with these suits? I know that Anglophilia is a big part of the trad look, but does this look silly? And what do you think of button down collars with a trad sack? I know it's a classic look, but somehow I have developed a prejudice against button down collars with suits--it somehow looks shlubby to me. Do I need to get over this?
