Is there a rule of thumb on what buttons to button on cable cardigan?

While I certainly agree with always leaving the bottom button undone, is it wrong to wear a cardigan with all the buttons undone?
I personally don't like an unbuttoned cardigan. I think it works on a SJ/SC/BLZR because of the construction of the chest and lapels, which help it maintain its shape. A knit just looks funny to me when unbuttoned.

Thanks to jackmccullough, hardline 42 and the Earl of Ormond for the responses to my earlier inquiry.

As to the Earl's suggestion that all cardigan buttons, including the bottom/last button, should be buttoned (if any are buttoned), wouldn't that create a situation that encourages such garments to creep ever higher on the wearer's hips? LOL. How could that ever be good?

I think the question about whether it looks ok to leave all buttons undone has more to do with the fit of sweater than anything else. These are casual clothes, so really the purported rules are a lot more flexible than if we were talking about suits or something. Thus, I also don't think the 'leave the bottom button undone' suggestion is right, either; I don't think it's 'wrong', though - just that it's a suggestion and shouldn't be taken as a rule like leaving the last button of a waistcoat undone. Back to the totally undone look, though... it's about the fit. A loose sweater will look sloppy when it's all undone, sagging in the wrong places and looking ill-fitting in general - think of like when you see a guy in an unbuttoned double breasted suit jacket. The horror! On the other hand, if the sweater fits a bit more on the snug side, it won't droop and look off, so I think it can be worn unbuttoned.

I'm inclined to agree, Bjorn. And while cardigans aren't particularly to my taste, I do have one 'pub jacket' cardigan that I think looks much better with the bottom button open. However, that's an outerwear cardigan. One worn around the house to either save fuel costs or because the house is old enough not to have central heating might be a different story. After all, buttoning the bottom would hold in more heat.
