This isn't a question of quality, but rather the fit of Brooks Brothers outlet lines versus retail.

For our anniversary, my wife bought me a new sport coat from Brooks Brothers website. Unfortunately, she ordered a 42L and I usually wear a 40R. I've never bought a BB coat or suit before, only shirts, but I was surprised at the fit of the 42L. The sleeves were way too long, but the length of the coat seemed fine. Likewise, the fit on the shoulder was very close, but maybe a tad wide.

Also unfortunately, in the last month they closed the only retail store in town, leaving me with only an outlet store.

So, what I'm trying to determine is if I can go to the outlet, try on a few coats, and get an accurate idea of what size I am.

The short answer to your question is yes, you can. Indeed, in past decades I have bought more BB retail store products on clearance in BB Outlet stores, than I have outlet store designs. Alas, more recently, such does not seem to be the case. :(

Be careful however with trousers. Several years ago I tried on Madison fit trousers at an outlet store and they fit horribly. They had a very short zipper, short rise and were decidedly different from other Madison fit trousers I had purchased at a Brooks regular store. The sales person told me that they had changed the fit for the outlet stores. Needless to say, I did not purchase ones from the outlet.
