Bow Ties and Shirt Collars

Having recently gone back to bowties,and having added a few new ones, I have noticed that the fairly large collection of spread collar shirts I have accumulated of late do not work with the bows. In fact they look ridiculous, and I need to get some proper shirts. Some straight collar shirts don't look right either. The points appear to be too long (the bows I prefer are medium size, not large and not very thin either). Anyone have an opinion as to where the shirt collar points should be relative to the bottom points of a bowtie? My sense is one should see very little of the points, but I am not sure.
