i live in Colorado and am a fan of bolo ties. Not big gaudy ones but leather cord with classy clasps. I know that these are not really appropriate for business in a lot of places but where do you think they fit in modern couture? A couple of examples:

Where they are fine they are absolutely fine.
Where people are not familiar with them There simple mind's don't know what to think.
You don't need cowboy boots to go with them.
A cowboy style shirt helps. Not talking about an fancy entertainers cowboy shirt. Just a regular dresser cowboy shirt. If you have worn these clothes enough that they are natural on you, then you can wear them anywhere.
Clothes are about position and history. They tell who you are. They help others to size you up. They also reveal who the cuckoo people are when they size people up wrong.
There is a difference between those who wear as a show and those who come from the lifestyle of farming.

To me they're perfectly appropriate regionally. Colorado to Montana and the Southwest, sure. East of the Rockies? Highly questionable. West of the Cascades? I have severe doubts.

Just curious, what sort of footwear would you recommend?

Thanks for the input. As an aside, I don't look at these as a tie. More so an instead of. I have worn these with or without my Tony Lamas. I wore one with a suit once but didnt really like the result. What I have liked is good jeans, brown AE Sanfords and a sportcoat or blazer. Particularly my green Isaia coat and a couple of Zegnas. I like the mixing of quality and casual and feel good wearing it. And yes, you can add a Western hat to the ensemble, which I sometimes do. As a native Californian, I guess I appreciate the 'diversity' or whatever. While in Vegas last week, I wore this ensemble and received a very nice compliment from a waitress in a high end restaurant. I think she genuinely appreciated it and was not just angling for a better tip. Regardless, she was pretty hot and I liked it.
Also, though I haven't been able to get it to work for me, I think the following is a great regional look. Because of the 3 piece suit?

Yay if paired with western attire. Nay double nay and triple nay if worn with fine dress clothing
@cosmotoast,

Greetings and good day to you and everyone else as well. I would have to disagree with your comments. However, in a polite and friendly way of course. Remember, this is a discussion about clothing. We aren't saving lives!

I rarely have an occasion to wear a tie. When an occasion does come up I have both cloth ties and bolos and wear both equally. I suppose it just depends on what I'm in the mood for. Yes I do wear bolos with my fine dress clothing, including my bespoke three piece suits and I don't see anything wrong with it and if there is I don't care anyway. I do what makes me happy.

@paxonus Western clothing and/or cowboy boots aren't necessary. I see men all the time wearing bolos without these accoutrements. It's a matter of personal preference. Have a great day!

Indeed, the propriety of such accessories is more greatly determined by where they are being worn than what garments/footwear with which they are being worn! To the OP, if you like Bolo ties and they look good on you, wear them. ;)

That is a remarkably stylish look. It's not one that I would choose to wear but I have to compliment the gentleman depicted. A great regional look? Unquestionably!

My statement is my opinion from being a life long resident of rural Georgia. I'm sure bolos are perfectly fine in places like Texas where it's common attire. Here in Georgia bolos presence is almost non existent

@cosmotoast,

Fair enough sir and thank you! I respect the thoughts of everyone. Like I said, "polite and friendly." I'm not here to argue!

I was merely trying to point out that in some regions of the country, such as where I live, a bolo with fine dress clothing is certainly acceptable. Western clothing and/or cowboy boots aren't a requirement to make it look right. Have a great day!

My grandfather on my mother's side was from upstate New York and wore chinos, a button up shirt, and a bolo tie as almost a uniform on a daily basis. He didn't wear cowboy boots but I think he always wanted to be a cowboy as most of the books on his bookcase were Zane Grey. He is the only person i have ever seen wear a bolo tie in person yet he never got anything but compliments on them.

One of my uncle's was born in Russia. Because of Lenin they moved to Mexico, he was probably about 4 years old, and then to the US at maybe 9 years old. They lived in Montana and then eastern Washington and finally western and eventually Florida. From Montana on he has worn bolo ties. They were normal for him. When you saw him with a bolo tie you knew he was a man who knew farming. Horse farming was part of his life. Wheat was harvested with real horse power. And then there was cattle. Even I was brought up that a bolo tie is equal to any other kind of tie. You don't need western attire. A bolo tie is easier to put on. Don't need the western life either. My uncle wore them so often it was just part of him. There is nothing to show off. It is just a tie. Most his shirts were western, but you wouldn't notice unless you looked. His suits were not western style. I don't remember him having cowboy boots.

Just start wearing them and they will eventually become part of you. And people will respect that. At first you may feel self conscious, but that will pass. Fancy ones are probably best to stay away from at the beginning so people hardly notice. In so many ways cloth ties are so awkward compare bolos.

I once saw Bryan Ferry (note for some of you - a popular English singer of times past) near my flat in London. He was wearing a white suit, white shoes and a black bolo tie - in other words, pretty much how he would dress on stage. He seemed completely relaxed in it - as if he'd just thrown it all on and walked out the front door without further ado.

On him, it looked fine.

Substitute a black string tie for the bolo and you have an archetypal Southern gentleman. It all works.
