Hello,

New lawyer here. UK based. Slim. A neophyte in my field definitely. I would like recommendations for a black suit principally to fool myself into thinking that I looked serious and I am a bastion of gravitas and solemnity... appearing in court does require an act of sorts and it might help me get into character. I hope...

My female colleagues wear a lot a black suits & dresses and they look the business. That said, you still got to plead well in front of the bench regardless of what you are wearing or you come out with nothing !

Any recommendations for a purchase in the UK ? Thanks.

Black suits are not stylish. You’d be far better served by a navy blue or charcoal grey suit. Since you already have two navy suits, I’d go with charcoal. Hopefully some of our UK members can make recommendations on where to look. Good luck on your new career, and in finding a proper suit to make you look as much the business as your colleagues.

Are you a new junior barrister or a new solicitor? If the former, would your suit be hidden beneath your robes anyway? If the latter, then what's de rigueur in the legal world in your part of the UK? And do different fields of law (corporate, criminal, public, etc.) tend to different suit styles as well? What are other people wearing in your field?

These days don't most UK attorneys get licensed as both? I'm not sure the old school independent barrister is really much of a thing anymore.
