Hey fellas,

So I'm building an vest/dress shirt outfit, and would humbly appreciate the opinions of my fellow members between two vest choices for a pair of trousers and tie that I own now.

The trousers and tie that I own are charcoal heather and brown Paisley in the pics below, and I'm wanting to pair those up with a plain sky blue dress shirt, and a Tweed vest. I have found these two below, which one do you guys think would be the best choice?

I do plan on getting a charcoal jacket or blazer to go with the pants as well at some point, just trying to build the outfit and the vest would be more versatile and used with what I have in the closet now if I grabbed it first

I agree with SG_67 and Flanderian, but putting that aside and just trying to answer your question - I lean toward the grey one as it is "quieter" and will - as you build out your wardrobe - be more versatile, more of a "basic." The other one is a nice looking vest, but owing to its stronger pattern, not a "core" wardrobe item.

That said, and your pics are a bit dark for me to pick up tone, but I'm not sure either vest goes great with those pants as the charcoal one might be too close in color (i.e., not enough contrast) and it looks blue-grey; whereas, your pants look brown grey (i.e., the grey are in different families and will look off next to each other).

The second vest might work with the pants, but I'd need to see the tones and textures better. Also, from the pics, the tie looks like it would go with the charcoal vest, but be off in tone for the tan vest.

The garment known today as a waistcoat in the UK but as a vest in the USA (it was also called a vest in 17th Century England), was imported from Persia. It predates the modern suit before becoming incorporated into it and then dropping out of fashion, has been worn as a stand alone garment for centuries. It was de riguer in the 70's for rock bands, and currently popular again in England due to Gareth Southgate. Wear it as you will, and enjoy it!

I'm loving that patterned vest. Nice lapels and even a ticket pocket. I'm also not one to wear vests without a jacket on top, but I would be ok wearing either of these without one.
The solid vest is nice as well. You'd definitely want to take care in having enough contrast to your slacks as mentioned above.
