I am noticing that on some of my belts, there is a bit of tarnishing on the nickle buckle. I suppose a polishing cloth taken to it should shine it up? The one I notice it on is a Martin Dingman dress belt, black. I do have silver polish also for like tablewear, if that is a possibility.

Also, on some of my brown belts, one pair of pants might dictate that the belt be cinched on the second hole from the end, where as most of my pants allow for the third or middle hole. When worn on the second hole, sometimes you can see creasing or even discoloration of the belt where the buckle laid up against the leather. It looks like a blackish line. Would using say Bick4 conditioner on it help? Is that the patina I see referenced and just let it do that?

Now on one belt, it just cracked. I have read that perhaps that is a laminate type of belt, lower quality. Ready to toss it.

One time, years ago, I tried to polish a belt and despite aggressive buffing, the wax would come off on a shirt or even the pants I was wearing.

So, is it the quality of the belt and/or leather that causes this cracking/discloration? Would I be better off to order a belt from Equus?

I do have one leather belt I got at a country and western store, and it is pure leather and does not crack, but it does discolor some. I have a couple of Jos. A Bank belts and the one is cracking.

If you suggest a new belt, then how can I distinguish something that wont crack or disolor? I have a Hilfiger belt that wears like a workhorse, gotten at all places TJ Maxx.

Also:

1) how to get on equus list to get notice of sales?
2) what about stateside belt makers, like Narragansett's belts, or https://leathergoodsconnection.com/. Found some at thirteen50leather.com, about $55, and they seem serviceable, but I dont know the difference between bridle leather and veg tanned leather. Orionaleather seems good too
4) Why does one get the two prong roller buckle?

Pic of my belt. 1.5" banana republic. shows the discoloration. Wont even post a pic of the cracked one. Its being tossed.

Sorry, I don't have a good answer. Belts are a crapshoot. Plus, they undergo so many stresses and strains, and the buckles get dinged so frequently, that I have stopped worrying about creases and fading and tarnish. Shoe leather--that's what I care about. Belts? Eh. Regarding belts, I buy middle-of-the road quality--or what I think might be quality--and take my chances, knowing that no belt will remain pristine for long.

Mainly I'm posting to let you know that your comments have reminded me of a joke told by the late, troubled, and very funny comedian Mitch Hedberg:

"My belt holds my pants up, but the belt loops hold my belt up. I don't really know what's happening down there. Who is the real hero?"

I’ve never tried to polish a belt. I’ve put some leather lotion on them every now and then. Never had an issue with clothes staining with that.

I’m not sure on Equus’ email list. I probably signed up when I first ordered. If you can’t find it in the site, I’d just email them and ask to be added. I’ve found their customer service to be good.

Now this is attention to detail. Bully for you.

I agree that I don't think you can really polish a belt - it will come off on your clothing. One thing I have done to help equalize wear is to wear it clockwise instead of counter or to alternate - that can warp the belt the opposite direction and and kind of keep the wear more even.

So now I'm curious if anyone ever noticed and said something to you.

SHABBY BELT BLUES

(Sung to the tune of the 1923 song "Cotton Belt Blues," composed by Spencer Williams, and sung by Lizzie Miles, accompanied by Clarence Johnson on the piano)

See my belt.
See my belt.
And you'll see a strap
So discolored--it's so sad.
And look, you'll see a dent.
That's why I need to vent.

Dents and dings.
Ugly things.
I used to have a lovely belt.
Wore it proudly everywhere.
Down streets I'd stroll without a care.

It now has dark bands.
I should try other brands.
I've got the Shabby Belt Blues.

The buckle is dull.
All its luster it's lost.
I mean it's tarnished--
Gave up all its gloss.
Then polishing failed me.
Guess I should proclaim it a loss.

That supple belt
Seduced and did me wrong.
That supple belt
Seduced and did me wrong.
Its looks didn't last.
Just couldn't withstand normal wear.

That shabby belt
Is shaming me right now.
That shabby belt
Is shaming me right now.

To Goodwill it goes
And suspenders for me starting now.

I've got the Shabby Belt Blues.

I ended up getting two belts at www.thirteen50leather.com, one a tan oiled latigo belt and the other their natural undyed leather belt so that a patina could develop. I had a Saddleback front pocket card holder and it went from a chestnut color to dark brown and looks great and so this natural color will do that. Great harness or bridlle leather, thick with solid buckles. Sale on today for $39.04 for one belt. Also added a leather mousepad and will check out their leather bag if they do anyomore.
