Bought this beauty on eBay. Went through several (Burberry, London fog, etc) that were either too big, too short in the sleeves, or the wrong material (I don’t like the heavy cotton raincoats) I think I finally nailed it. Brooks Brothers, 40L, poly/cotton,slightly past the knee (think Columbo)
Wife thinks it’s God awful and that I look like “someone from an Alfred Hitchcock movie” which made me smile because I love old movies! Lol
Anyway, are these style raincoats really “old fashioned? I don’t think so, but I wanted to see what the cognoscenti here think. Thanks!

I have several in Navy, Khaki, and Stone. Vintage Burberry, Grenfell, Baracuta (Brand), Sanyo, (remarkable quality with made in Japan Sanyo!) Chrysalis from O'Connells, (another that's quality is incredible.)

They never go out of style and if they did I would pay no mind!

Post Script: Remember, I live in the Pacific Northwest where I actually wear them all in rotation. (At least that's the excuse I use for frivolously owning so many!)

Not in a million years. From vintage film noirs to Bullitt to Blade Runner, a traditional raincoat/trenchcoat never goes out of style. I have a vintage Aquascutum Khaki-ish color single breasted raincoat with a removable liner and I love it. My mother said I looked like a flasher but I just ignored her.

I came back with a fedora that I found at Goodwill yesterday. That Goodwill is next to the grocery store where I buy my groceries. Very convenient. I look around in there not knowing what I might find. The color is unusual, a kind of muted mauve color. It works with my light complexion and blonde hair color. I can wear that fedora with my camel hair polo coat or my trenchcoats. It is cold here in the Midwest right now.

That looks fantastic! I think the balmacaan you're wearing is easier to wear than a trench coat, since the design is simpler, and thus it looks less old-fashioned. But even my 30-something wife and some of her 30-something friends wear trench coats for the rain. Traditional raincoats are stylish, for both men and women. I wonder if its the colour your wife is responding to being old-fashioned.

Looks great! I think long raincoats keep you dry - imagine that.

I once asked my tailor about shortening a wool black topcoat from full length (below the knee) to 3/4 length. He responded, "Why, so you can be cold like everyone else?"

Your coat is both stylish and functional. You can wear it with suits, sport-coats, sweaters, wool slacks, cords, chinos, jeans. You name it. The trenchcoat is the most versatile for a an urban-suburban environment. You can wear it it work over a your best suit as you prepare to close the deal of the century. You can throw it on with Jeans and a sweater and drop your kids off at school.

You can also go less formal and get a Barbour waxed cotton jacket, which is both functional and trendy. Not as nice with suit, but fine with a sport coat. Great on blustery days where you can wear your oxford-cloth button downs, shetlands and LL Bean boots to work. They also work fine on cooler dry days. The waxed cotton jacket is the via-media with a town and country feel. You can go hunting or birdwatching in these or mill about bougie neighborhoods in the city or tony towns on the Connecticut coast looking posh.

Heck, you can get a gore-tex jacket with a hood and channel all the thru-hikers of days gone by. This wouldn't work with either a suit or sport-coat. Goes fine with sweaters and fleece. Mostly fleece. The gore-tex is the most suited for outdoor activites that require less bulky and lighter jackets that allow freedom of movement. Pack it in your day pack if you want to be prepared in case a rain storm hits on your hikes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Get all three.

I think the Mackintoshes/Balmacaans are more timeless than trench coats, which can be an affect or cosplay. Mackintoshes/Balmacaan were quite "modern" in Midcentury Modern style!

Personally I wouldn't worry about the size (a bit big is OK) one can get it adjusted! However, the material is important, once you find one that isn't too bulky and feels comfortable, take it tour local tailors and get the required adjustments! Does that make sense?

I have a Burberry trench, yes with the belt and epaulets, which I bought 40 years ago. It still looks magnificent. I bought it one size too large to be worn over a suit. As I'm retired it hasn't been worn in quite a while as I don't stand/walk much in the rain anymore to catch a bus, train, cab, or plane, but when I did wear it I always wore one of my fedora hats to complete the classic look.
