Lol eBay but the seller promised it was new. Only reason I'm not 100% convinced they're human is due to the number and relatively consistent size and coarseness.

Thought maybe it was part of the merino? I dk.
There are parts of the human body with hair that is coarse and consistent in size...

all, here is the item in question. it was in fact "new" with tags.

how new it really is i guess is up to debate. it does seem odd that a garment with tags that has never been worn would have small black hairs interwoven in the fabric.

i have contacted the seller to see what he's willing to do. i doubt he'll do much to help.

It's been a long time since I used it, but if the seller isn't responsive, the dispute resolution at Ebay was slow but very effective.

Also, I've been told, most sellers will accommodate legitimate complaints if you simply threaten either a bad review or to use the dispute resolution option (but of course, first just reach out to the seller nicely).

But again, personally, I've only had one problem on Ebay many years ago.

done.

but again, just seems so odd there'd be human hair in a "new" sweater. unless it was worn in the past with the tags on which i guess is possible.

This used to be a "thing" in Britain, especially with the ladies. (maybe still is, probably happens here too). Marks and Spencer, among others, had a "no questions" return policy, so enterprising folk would buy some nice clothing, wear it for a night out, with tags cleverly hidden, but still attached, and then return the item(s) the next day for a full refund!

As derum notes, it was/is a thing as some people have no shame. Also, having worked for a department store in the '80s (and the technology has, obviously, only gotten much better), we had the equipment then to reattached tags/seal bags/etc. in many ways that looked like the item came fresh from the factory despite having been used and returned.

Shoot, I've picked worse things from my Big Mac and still ate it.*

Stuff gets tried on in stores and reshelved all the time. A shopkeeper is advised to brush items and look for blemishes before reshelving, but I wouldn't be concerned. I would not hesitate to ask the seller for a drycleaning credit if there were other signs of wear.

*No, not really. But, kinda.
