I bought these Ferragamo boots at a boxing week sale for $199 Canadian, which I think was a great deal. They feel good and are a size 10, which is my normal size. However, they are very long and narrow, and I can't help thinking they are too big for me.

I have never owned narrow shoes or boots like this, so maybe the fit is normal, but there is about 2 1/4 inches between my toe and the end of the boot. I've marked my toe with a bit of tape in the pix below, and would appreciate any feedback regarding the fit of these boots. All sales were final, so returning them is not an option.

I have two boots. One pair have a narrow toe because the gap is an inch or so at most.

How do they feel when you walk? If you feel ok when walking in them, then fine; however, if when walking, they feel as if they are too big then they are too big.

From where you have put the mark, they do seem big. Yes, they are narrow but not too narrow that it justifies a 2.5 inch gap.

Agree. Obviously I can't tell how your foot is actually fitting inside there, but these are not knife-point cowboy boots, so it stands to reason that your foot should take up a bit more space. However, if there isn't any forward movement of your foot during walking, and they don't look clown-shoe big on you, why not wear 'em? You can't return them, and they do look pretty nice.

Thanks for the quick replies. They feel fine when I'm walking, and my foot doesn't move inside, even with my thinnest socks. They look okay to me from above, but when I look at my profile in a mirror they seem really long, almost clownish.

Maybe I'm worrying too much, because they aren't much longer than some of my other shoes pictured below. In fact they are a tiny bit shorter than my size 42 Canalis, and a bit longer than my 9AUS RM's which are too tight in the toe. Shoe sizes drive me nuts and don't seem to make any sense most of the time. I don't know how anyone can order shoes online.

I think one criteria should be that the widest part of your foot matches the widest part of the shoe. This is a bit hard to judge accurately, but it should give you a rough idea.

With the boots unzipped, how far can you mash your foot forward? This will give you some idea as to the toe room. If the toes narrow quite a bit, then the width will prevent your foot from going too far forward. I usually find if I push my foot forward in the shoe, I have about one finger's room behind my heel. This is again, just a rough guide.

Probably the best thing to do is just to try on a smaller size and see how it fits.

I don't know how anyone can order shoes online.

People who use the same shoemaker know what their size. However, I would still avoid purchasing shoes online even if they are shoemakers I have several shoes from, I would rather spend more to try them instore.

Thanks for the advice. Even with them unzipped I can't move my foot forward much, maybe one finger at the most. There is certainly room in front of my toe, but the widest part of my foot matches the widest part of the boot almost perfectly. They are also pretty tight across my instep, which prevents my foot moving forward.

Unfortunately, they only had two pairs left, 10 and 10 1/2, so I couldn't try on any smaller sizes. The purchase was a bit of an impulse buy, because it was the only size 10 left, and they are beautiful boots at a good price. I don't know what they would normally sell for, but I don't think I've ever seen Ferragamos like this for much less than $500CAD.

One concern of mine regarding shoes with elongated toes is the tendency to drag or catch the toe more often. I'm clumsy enough as is, and don't like feeling that a shoe contributes to that by being longer than necessary.

A caveat: your foot may not move much now, but ask yourself if the instep will still be tight and the forefoot snug as the leather stretches with age and wear.
