Well, after trying probably two dozen pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes, I finally found a pair that seem comfortable: Macneils in 9B.

The eyelets do come pretty close together as shown in the photo below. Are they so close that I should pass on these?

They look fine, I'd wear them as-is. If after breaking in the laces touch, you can decide about a tongue pad.

They look fine. I wouldn't think twice about wearing those.
