Any harm to leaving ties tied until next usage?

It just dawned on me that when I do a great Windsor or half_windsor knot for my tie, why should I untie it only to do it all over again. Is there any harm to just loosening the tie to slip over your head and hanging the tie by the leftover loop until the next usage? If anyone has a comment on whether this is deleterious to the tie or not, please let me know. Doesn't it make sense to tie a tie great once and then keep it tied in similar fashion for each repeated use? Granted more closet space needed to hang ties which are looped, but doesn't this sound like a great idea. In essence, why do we completely untie ties for the following usage when we could just slip the completed knot over our head again and draw it snug. Any comments please. drrobert

It's best to untie your necktie and let it hang, or carefully roll it up. This allows the silk to retain its original shape and helps with wrinkles.

I consider tying my tie as an important step in starting the day in the morning... excuse my over-visual example, but kind of like putting on a fresh pair of underwear in the morning. I can't say that its not crossed my mind to preserve a well tied knot but I also loosen them during the afternoon/evening so they don't end up looking as sharp later on if I want to tighten them up...

ties knotted permanently

After awhile you'll learn to tie a tie perfect everytime. Leaving the knot in a tie will do great harm to the silk fibers. Also, many dandies have more than a hudred ties and storage becomes a problem. Leaving a tie knotted is similar to never using shoe trees.

drrobert,

I left a tie tied all summer once by accident,
when I recovered the tie from where I had left it and brought it to the cleaners to be cleaned and pressed, the lady turned and threw it out right before my eyes (I know her well and have know her for many years).

Don't do it.
Untie your tie each day,
let it rest as you would a suit.

LOL! Great illustration...I agree completely.

Tying a tie

Yes. You should ALWAYS untie a tie to keep the fabric in good shape... treat your clothes well, and they will treat you well.

Sometimes knots don't come out so well, but you get better with practice. And some days, it's all right to have a knot that doesn't look just so. I like having my tie dimple off-center every so often because it adds character (and it may just be an off-center kind of day).

If you got the knot right the first time, you can get it right again. Untie it, it will lengthen the life of your ties. I would also assume you don't wear the same knot every time. Different collars dictate a different knot.

Have a tie with a perfect knot ... but open in back and closed with Velcro. This way the knot is never loosened
or handled ... just one perfect know ... never touched but taken off using Velcro and reattached on next wearing.
no wear and tear... a perfect tie. Are they made?

The problem with leaving it tied is twofold (no pun intended!).

As mentioned the wrinkles will become almost permanent, and will crush the inner lining.

The other problem that occurs is that as you re-tighten the tie around your collar, it stretches slightly.
After some wearings you will find that the back side end will get longer and longer until the tie does need to be tied again. Then you will see that the old knot has become almost permanent.
And steaming does not work great on most 'better neck wear'.

I don't recommend leaving one's ties tied between wearings, but frankly can't see how doing so would be harmful to the condition of the tie, unless the ties were stored in overcrowded conditions, being crushed by other garments/closet contents. :icon_scratch:

To me, part of the beauty of a tie is having it look slightly different each time you wear it. Why would you want the knot to stay the same? IMO, there's no such thing as "a perfect knot." The point is that for the knot to not look perfect. It should look done by hand, and therefore slightly imperfect.

I don't wear a tie every day; I wear them for special occasions or job interviews. No sense learning to tie it just right, just to forget how to do it next time you might need it. My ties hang tied. Besides, a tie clip goes a long way in looking professional.

I'll learn to tie a tie when I need to wear one every day(even then I'll try to get away with tied ties as long as I can ;-)

Edit: sorry for the bump, but I wanted to add nuance to what seemed an EXTREMELY one-sided discussion.

I've tied nothing but 4-in-hand knots since the 80's (we did Windsors and half-Windsors in those days with some shirts). Always hated them lookswise. Still do. But the classic 4-in-hand couldn't be easier to tie and untie. Personally, I would never leave a good tie knotted. These days, however, I probably have the occasion to wear a tie maybe half a dozen times a year.
