Hi all,

I have been a long time customer of CT for their shirts, which I have found to be quite a good compromise between cost and quality. Another big factor for me is being able to select my sleeve length, as my neck is relatively large compared to the rest of me.

However, over time the company has drastically reduced its selection of shirts which are not non-iron, to the point where there are only one or two available in their 'super slim' fit (I should add at an exorbitant price and in my opinion a lower quality than their standard shirts).

I therefore need to look elsewhere for my shirts, but do not want to buy from the likes of TM Lewin or Hawes and Curtis, whose shirts I consider to be inferior and who also do not have the correct sleeve length for me in my size. I am happy to pay more than I did for my CT shirts (perhaps around £50) if they fit better, and so have tried a couple of the online 'made to measure' websites which have on the whole been OK, but more expensive than I would like. Likewise, I also tried Harvie and Hudson and whilst the quality of the shirts is good, they are quite expensive, and most importantly even the 'slim fit' shirts are rather baggy.

I have been having some difficulty finding a shirt retailer which matches all my criteria and within my price bracket. Do I need spend more? Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Have you looked at Jermyn Street Guild? They offer customized neck and sleeve lengths. Plus, they come in 4 fits, including extra slim and super slim.

Thomas Pink? Definitely better quality than CT but much pricier.

Charles Tyrwhitt, despite the growth of customer demand for Non Iron shirts still offers a selection for non Non Iron shirts, which it constantly reviews.

Within our AW19 collection we offer 22 options of non Non Iron Extra Slim Fit shirts at £39.95.

As the Super Slim fit is relatively new to Charles Tyrwhitt our AW19 collection offers 2 options of non Non Iron, however for SS20 the offer will increase to 6 options.

All our shirts are priced at £39.95 with the exception of our Luxury Egyptian cotton shirts which retail at £69.95.

Have you tried Kamakura, if they ship to the UK? The Tokyo slim fit is quite close to the CT super slim, and right now a few are actually on sale--a rarity for Kamakura. They're much better than CT and all are the old fashioned sort you need to iron.

I’m a huge fan of Kamakura and I’ve pretty much worn them exclusively for the past 5 years.

The only problem is selection. They have a greater variety in store though. Otherwise, plenty of non “non-iron” shirts, excellent quality and about the best value out there.

Curious as to OPs earlier assertion that Lewin is an inferior brand. I have shirts from both and view them as pretty much equivalent, in both quality and fit.

I recall a number of years ago someone said that TM Lewin had unfused collars while CT had fused. I know CT does fused collars, but can anyone confirm TM Lewin's collar construction? I think that the average consumer who buy shirts at that price don't care about unfused collars, and they would even find them faulty because of how difficult they are to press.

At least in my experience the construction is nearly identical. The only substantive differences I've appreciated (I have more CT shirts than Lewin for what it's worth) is that Lewin achieves it's extra slim fit (one removed from their most slim) by darting, whilst my extra slim from CT is cut extra slim without the use of darting. I should add that this applies almost exclusively to their business casual wear (well, I guess I need to evaluate what the world views as business casual, but that's another conversation for another post). I stick with BB extra-slim (Milano in the current nomenclature?) non-irons for "regular" business wear.

Apologies, I don't frequent this forum regularly and just saw your reply.

I have found that CT's shirts tend to be longer-lasting with less fraying on the collar and cuff, as well as having harder wearing elbows (I have had two or three Lewins shirts where the elbow has torn). Furthermore, I have had numerous TM Lewin shirts which have suffered from a crease in the collar and not a single CT shirt where this has happened.

That said, I do think the quality of CT's shirts has declined over the years.
