Recently got some 405’s. I measure 10.5D on brannock. Actually more like a 10.8D. In this boot I ordered a 10.5C as a few have reccomended. It feels about perfect, just a touch snug on my instep. I have not tried my usual shoe size - 10.5D but i have tried the whole size down thing and briefly owned a pair in 10D and they felt short and wide. Is it normal for instep to be a touch snug? Will that stretch a little? Or does it sound like i should try my usual shoe size?

I believe the Indy boot is on the TrueBalance last. As such, it is recommended that you size down about 1/2 from what you normally wear. The toe box tends to be more generous, but I’m not sure going narrower will necessarily give you a better fit.

It’s really hard to know as you are the one wearing the boot, but if it feels tight, I wouldn’t roll the dice on this one. Certainly the boot will stretch and give, but will it do so to the point where you could wear them comfortably all day?

I tried going one half down it wasnt quite right for me. Felt short and wide. Arch not in right spot. Excess leather pinched my heel when i took a step. Someone in another forum suggested dropping a width as his fit perfect that wAy and these feel pretty much perfect, just a touch snug in my instep. I measure like a 10.85 on a brannock device.

My experience was similar....I started out by ordering my Indy boots 1/2 size down form my usual size and the boots were too short in the toe box. In my normal size 9.5D, they fit just fine. ;)

Im tempted to order in my usual D width. I just know the size down in my usual width was way to wide in the heel and sides.

I assume you're ordering these online? I would have gone to an Alden retailer and tried them on starting with my normal size. My nearest Alden dealer is an hour and a half away in Raleigh but that's where I'm going when I finally get a pair of Indys. If you have no reasonable option to try on in person, definitely use a dealer that takes returns without a fuss.

I usually wear a size 10D or 10E shoe. I wear size 9 EE in Indys, as the 9.5E seemed too long and narrow. However, my shell Indys are size 9.5D and fit very well. Indy boot sizing is strange indeed. If the tightness is uncomfortable, I wouldn't count on them to ever stretch enough to be comfortable.

Order your normal size, or go to the Brannock website and see how to use the info from their device, and see if your normal size is your right size.

Alden is consistent with Brannock.
Is it? Seems everyone does different sizing methods with this boot for some reason. Im about to order a pair in my usual shoe size though.

There is a website called Permanent Style I just came across while looking for something else which has an interview with a guy named Happ from which I took this quote:

“I remember a fashion customer in Amsterdam, big Alden fan, wore them every day. I said to him once, ‘I think you’re wearing the wrong size’. They were too small. I got him to try a size up, and you could see the light go off in his eyes. He finally got what I’d been talking about all this time.”

The whole thing is interesting in you like that sort of thing. He talks about how Alden shoes were designed for comfort.

I suspect a lot of the people who size down are just...wearing the wrong size; they are fooled by the generous toe boxes of some lasts into getting shoes too small from heel to ball.

Advice some random AE customer service employee told me over the phone years ago -- "If they aren't comfortable when you first put them on, they're never going to be truly comfortable."

Many years of experience later -- that woman was spot on and gave me excellent advice. It's been correct 100% of the time.
