I finally bought a pair of Alden handsewn penny loafers in cordovan. After much discussion - with people on this board, the folks at Alden, the retailer that sold them to me - I decided to buy the pair that was a little snug instead of the pair that was a little loose.

Today was my first day to wear them. Well, the "little snug" shoes became very uncomfortable by the middle of the day. The length of the shoe seems OK - but the pain is on the top of my foot. The vamp of the shoe is pressing down on the top of my foot and making it hurt.

Is this something I can expect to improve as the shoes break in? I hesitate to have them stretched because I don't know how much they'll loosen up through wear, but I also can't wear them like this very long.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
