There was a time, in the very near past, when one could still obtain a variety of goods, off-the-peg, in "actual" sizes. Boxer shorts were sized according to the waist. Socks were sized accordingly. Hats were sized according to a man's actual hat size; even the venerable Christy's of London now sizes hats according to S, M, L, XL. Sport shirts from Brooks came in actual sizes, rather than S, M, L, XL, etc. Gloves were sized according to, well, glove size.

These traditional sizings are becoming rarer. It's a horrible trend.

It with the traditionally sized items -- the Lock hat, the Tugaloo boxer, the Alywn Glove -- that I shore up the fragments of my ruin.

PS (I don't know if there is a sock company that still makes socks in the old sock sizing system -- does anyone know).
