Afternoon Play Attire

What would you recommend wearing to an afternoon play to be held indoors?

I've been to evening plays and my typical attire is odd jacket, tie, and khakis. Tomorrow in Laguna Beach (CA), where the play will be held, the high will be 79. My husband and I will be hanging around town for a while, including lunch, before the play begins at 2pm. I'm thinking semi-casual--OCBD, khakis, and suede bucks, but I am curious what others think/recommend. The temp indoors will be cooler than outdoors, but I should be fine with a long-sleeve shirt, but perhaps I should bring a jacket or sweater in case I need it.

Thanks!

I'm looking forward to the play. A fellow church parishioner/friend kindly gave us the tickets as she is unable to attend.

My theater policy is always "layer", because you just never know what the temperature situation will be.

Laguna Beach I'd probably go "resortish" with a sport coat, but OCBD/khakhis/bucks with a casual sort of sport coat (like even Madras or a silk/linen blend in a light color) sounds good.

I'm always fine being dressed a step or two "nicer", and I've always felt live theater invites a modicum of sartorial effort (I mean they're putting on a show).

I always, ALWAYS wear a jacket to an event where I’m the in attendance (yes, even monster truck shows). When I was working in Los Angeles the summer of ‘17, I wore a jacket every time I went out and never received a funny look (that I noticed). I feel it’s respectful of the performers and could always be used to warm someone colder than myself. I also exercise certain liberties that lend themselves to jackets or baggy/loose clothing. My vote is jacket/sport coat.

We arrived in Laguna Beach about noon, had a delicious lunch at Hennessey’s Tavern, and checked out the beach scenery before taking in “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder.” The play was an absolute hoot! The cast was small and highly talented. All in all, it was a wonderful afternoon!

And kind and thoughtful gents, your input helped me put together an ensemble appropriate for (an) afternoon play. :ROFLMAO:

White OCBD: Check
Rolled up sleeves: Check
Madras patchwork pants: Half Check* (I don't own a Madras shirt, but @williamkazak_6894's recc gave me inspiration)
White bucks: Check
Seersucker jacket: Half Check (not shown in pic, but I brought my sky blue/white seersucker jacket, which surprisingly paired well with the Madra pants. I only wore the jacket briefly in the theater).

My husband wore a maroon short-sleeve button down, a pair of medium dark Levi’s, and black semi-casual shoes. He was not dressed out of place. From what I could see, most of the men wore clothes on the casual side: Hawaiian and polo shirts, t-shirts, jeans, shorts, athletic shoes. I saw only one male audience member wearing a button down shirt, lightweight sport coat, and nice dress pants. I didn’t get a chance to see what type of shoes he was wearing.

The women in general were dressed nicely, many in beach/coastal/resort chic outfits. During intermission, when I was standing in line for the restroom, a woman in front of me started gushing over my Madras pants. :giggle:

Happy Sunday!

Looks great! Very well done, and glad the day was wonderful for the two of you in every way.

You mentioned that the play was a “hoot.” Would that include yuks, guffaws and chortles? ;)

Sorry I’m late to this. Been a busy weekend.

That outfit looks very nice and you wear it well. Be thankful your husband was with you and I’m sure you had your wedding ring on. Haha

I think its a little trickier for us guys to wear the patch madras pants but we can get away with the reverse, pm shirt, plain pants. I’m not sure why that is, just that I feel it is.

Im not a play attender except on the rare occasions someone I’m with enjoys it. However season tickets to the Symphony, Sunday Matinee, we dressed as if it was Saturday night. We were never over dressed. I generally wore a suit. Then too, of all the arts the Symphony I have always considered the most conservative and tend to attract the most hard cores so I’m not sure how much any of this weighs in for a matinee play in a beach town. But I still think you could always go more formal and you will still be fine.

Anyway great outfit again and glad y’all had a good time.

Thank you, @Lagavulin62!

Had I worn a jacket and tie, I would have looked out of place, but not in a bad way. Better to be overdressed than underdressed, or in yesterday's case, just right.

I rarely attend plays, but I would like to do it more!
