I see a lot on this forum regarding the Allen Edmonds Carlyle, but I just took a look at the To Boot New York Langford, each in black, and for some reason the TBNY Langford looks a little nicer. I think it has something to do with the vamp area. Either that, or the Carlyle doesn't photograph well (on the AE site and Nordstrom site).

The Langford (TBNY) - Black:

The Carlyle (AE) - Black:

Any you all have any experience with the Langford or have seen both side to side in person? Are they any different in person?

I'm trying to settle on one of these for a black tie optional event for a buddy's wedding next weekend. And then thereafter for other formal events and interviews.

Both are the same price, but are both the same quality? Specifically, is the Langford as good as quality as the Carlyle?

AE shoes shown on their website look horrible.

With that said, I’m really not a fan of either. The TBNY is certainly a bit sleeker but as to overall quality? Hard to say. I’d have to give the edge to AE as you can get them recrafted.

Allen Edmonds’ price point has gotten a bit out of control and they seem to have out kicked their coverage so to speak. At nearly $400, assuming you pay retail, their are so many more options of better quality and aesthetic appeal.

As for the TBNY, forget it. I see them all over the place at the off priced retailers for less than half of that.

Why would you pay retail for AE? Sign up for their email list, be patient and wait for the big sales, and you can get most shoes for $250-300.

Fwiw, I love the Carlyles, have two pairs. I partly love them because they're made on the best AE shoe last for my foot and fit me like they're bespoke, and partly because I hate the look of plain capped toes.
