Hey what's up? I'm doing a paper on fashion and was wondering what the consensus was on putting together a new fit. Like after finding the right clothing and shoe elements, how do you decide on what accessories you're going to add to the fit. For instance, I for one, buy the clothing first, then look around for accessories that would enhance the clothing. How do you shop?
Thanks in Advance for your help!

Let me understand this. You're writing a paper, and you want us to do your research for you?

Um, no. It's your paper, you do your own research.

I believe you have enough gall to be divided into three parts.

Kind Regards,

Chase

I don't believe he is asking us to do his research for him. If that was the case, then he would be expecting us to ask other people his question and then report back to him our results. He is conducting the research himself and asking us to participate. What is wrong with that?

I maintain he is asking us to do his research for him. There are dozens of books, magazines, newspapers, websites, etc. he could turn to for this kind of data rather than just post the question on a forum and expect the information to come flowing back to him, nice and neat.

At the very least
, he could search and view the dozens of threads on this topic here at AAAC and gather his own information.

So, yes, I believe he is taking the easy way out.

In my opinion, of course.

Answering a question or participating in a focus group (for example) is not conducting research. It is participating in research. There is a big difference and I'm not sure you know the difference.

And how do you know he hasn't already read books & websites? Maybe he just wants a little bit more info to add to that. Sure, he could used the search function. But he sure isn't the first person guilty of bringing up topics that have already been brought up.

Give him a break.

I believe WardrobeGirl (who dresses people for a living) asked a question awhile back about including shoe trees with shoes for her clients. That was her conducting research on a group of men who care a lot of about clothing. Nothing wrong with it.

ChicagoMediaMan, I've written numerous papers during my High School and College years. I also spent a couple of years as an Internet journalist. I believe I'm fairly comfortable with what research entails.

And even if I weren't, I still would know when something doesn't seem right. After all, even a blind man knows when the sun is shining. ;)

I tend to have accessories for a function:

Briefcase style bag - everyday to work
Watch - everyday
Umbrella - if it is raining or might rain; although I do have nice stick umbrella from James Smith & Sons
Sunglasses - if is sunny or might get sunny
Scarves - I have three, Ballantyne cashmere used for work or formal occasions; Ralph Lauren thin wool scarf for casual wear; and silk scarf, just for style although does have a function too.
Cufflinks - if required with shirt

I never shop for cloths and then accessories. I do not care for bracelets, sweat bands, chains, rings, etc.

For things like shoes, I have a rotation of shoes so they cater for different occasions. I would never get a pair of shoes to wear with one particular outfit.

Wow Chase, relax just a bit. It's only Monday.

To help out the OP, I think you'll find that a lot of posters here have a fairly good sized collection of accessories already, so in most cases wouldn't need to buy new ones for a new outfit. Are you referring to ties, links, etc? Or what?

I think by "fit" you mean "outfit" which is not the way I (or I would presume any of us here on the forum) shop. As for "accessories" I think those men wear are very limited:

Watch - generally people select only one or two to wear with everything.

Cufflinks - only when wearing a french cuffed shirt. As for other considerations - there may be attempts to match metal to a belt if there is one, but otherwise, it's just a matter of personal preference. I think somebody could be quite happy with just two pair, one gold one silver in a basic pattern (e.g. knots).

Pocket Square - there are a ton of threads on how to select one and what makes a good one, but I don't think there are many of us who would build (much less purchase) an entire outfit on the basis of one, or purchase one only for wear with a select combination of clothes.

That's about all there is for men, unless you're counting ties or scarves, in which case, see the answer to pocket squares.

But what if your boat gets caught in a vortex and is forced to straddle the International Date Line for a few days?
Are you implying that I get to be worked up for another Monday, or would I immediately zoom into Wednesday mania?

Please clarify, forsberg. :icon_smile_wink:

I too did many research papers in college and high school. And it just so happens that I do media research for a living. Conducting focus groups is part of my job. In those groups, I ask people what they think of our on-air TV personalities and what there media habits are, among other things. The people in these focus groups are not conducting research. They are participating in research. This is where I think you have it wrong.

Either way, people here do not seem to have a problem answering the question.

CMM-27, I count three actual responses to the question posed in the OP in this thread thus far.

Hardly a landslide.

In my opinion, of course. ;)

I'm like that with everything. I even go further; the article must be wearable with a minimum of 5 items in my wardrobe. The exception that makes the rule valid is formal wear. *I only own a stroller so, for me I don't own any items that can't be worn with other things.

Ever walk into the ladies' room by mistake? I bet that's how the OP will feel when he sees this string. :icon_smile_big:

I buy suits knowing what shirts I have. I know all shirts will have white, stiff, detachable collars. Pocket squares are coordinated with shirts. Same applies to ties.

I have 3 sets of cuff links as I like them to be discrete. One set that is a hand-me-down from my late uncle. They're pearl set in siver and are seperable. I have a set of metalic round ones that came from Coles as a consolation prize when they goofed up an order. The third pair are from a railroad fraternal order and they are red and green cabooses. I tend not to wear them much.

My grip is the same one I've had for years and it doesn't enter into my thinking as far as accesories are concerned.

Since I wear either a DB or 3 piece suit my tie bar is hidden. It's functional. The one I use came from the NYC Transit Museum and has a subway token on it. Only I know that. Of course now you do as well.

When I wear a 3 piece suit my pocket watch is moored to the vest with a heavy gold chain attached at the button with a loop going to each respective pocket. It has a small knife on the opposite end. I have a fraternal emblem that comes from the center of the chain. When I wear a DB the watch is attached to my trousers with a leather strap. The watch is worn in the watch pocket of the trousers and is out of view.

On my lapel is a veteran's emblem from the railroad I used to work on. It's small and gold.

Now I don't think I did the OP's work for him. His work is reporting on what I said.

First make sure your report is in proper English, not street talk, and that you use words with meanings that have a wide and correct acceptance.

The basic is usually (for business wear) a suit. You add to that a shirt and then the accessories - necktie, shoes, belt, pocket square, watch, etc.

Most all of the accessories are added with color coordination in mind.

I wonder what order people have, mine is:

1. suit
2. tie (i prefer to match my tie to the suit; hence, coming before shirt)
3. shirt
4. shoes & belt (brown belt with brown shoes, the same with black shoes)
5. watch & bag is the same everyday
if required
6. umbrella, scarf, sunglasses
