I'm posting this because it's unusual. In the history of overcoats, shawl collars were once common, but they've largely disappeared. And while this is a handsome coat of beautiful tweed, I can't help but imagine how much more interesting it would be with peak lapels.

But this is entirely acceptable, and if such a less emphatic lapel is to your liking, it's an option you might enjoy.

No question that it is an impressive and, I'm sure, incredibly well-made garment, but the shawl collar with the coat's fabric's pattern and texture - and with it being a DB - just looks off to me. I could see a shawl collar working better on a SB, dark grey (with no loud pattern) overcoat as it might give it a more refined / elegant look and feel more organic to the coat's overall presentation.

I happen to agree!

When I've seen shawl collared overcoats, not uncommonly I've seen them made with fur collars. And while they're more commonly put on dressier cloth, put some brown fur on this, and it's whole different thing.

If you don't like fur, use dark brown alpaca pile for a similar effect.

Agreed, it's a rarity nowadays but still a great look. I still regret not pulling the trigger on a shawl-collared coat from Allsaints a number of years ago. I thought it too fashion-forward for my purposes at the time but would now snap it up in a minute.

I've always preferred a shawl collar in formal wear, but in an overcoat, not so much. It just looks wrong! I suspect a shawl collar on an overcoat is a but too sartorially sophisticated for a 'reformed hillbilly's' tastes. ;)
