Terrible example of formalwear, if that’s what this is supposed to be.

Do you belong to the University Club? We had a formal event quite recently.
Velvet smoking jackets have been part of black tie from the beginning. For some reason I can’t post a photo but here’s the Duke of Windsor in his:Did I miss something in the past 10 years and during that time did velvet jackets become synonymous with black tie (or was this a thing all along)? I happen to own 2, but have honestly never considered wearing them as for a black tie event. Instead, they are my usual go-to for cocktail attire (for an evening event). But having visited the Ralph Lauren store in Chicago very recently, they had velvet jackets of all colors and shape throughout the store, including the area where they have formalwear. Maybe it's simply because of the holiday season, but I wanted to check if this group to see if somewhere along the line did the definition get shifted.
People in areas where pot is legal go bespoke when buying smoking coats and robes. They want the best possible fit when formally getting stoned.Really? I haven't seen any in Portland and weed's been legal here for just years.
