Many, if not most people find any sheep's wool directly on their torso intolerably itchy. I know I do.

Though once-upon-a-time it was used for underwear and swimwear! Obviously made of sterner stuff than me. Haven't seen any for sale in my lifetime, though I buy and find wool socks entirely comfortable.

I have base layers for cold weather hiking and skiing that are merino wool. Incredibly warm, not bulky, and odor resistant. I don't find them itchy at all.

Personally, I think I'd run very warm with a merino wool undershirt, if it was going to be worn inside for any length of time. It would also make for a relatively expensive undershirt.

I wear SmartWool base layers all the time for outdoor activities. They make several weights, light - midweight - heavy, as well as s/s and l/s.

I wear a silk undershirt under dress clothes if I'll be outdoors for an extended period of time, sometimes with silk long-johns if needed. Thin, lightweight, very warm.

If you're in search of an undershirt to keep you warm, and open to wearing a wool alternative that is less expensive, undershirts made with acrylic fibers/yarn would be something to consider.

They are thin, incredibly warm, breath well, and as a bonus, they are not itchy like wool.

The most popular brand carrying this type of undershirt is Uniqlo -- the Heattech line.

The other is 32 Degrees.

Heattech is available in short sleeve and long sleeve. They also offer a long-john bottom made from the same material.

My wife and I wore Heattech and 32 Degrees when we visited Svalbard to visit the Global Seed Vault.

The only downside is that it's a synthetic material, so it holds odor moreso than other fabrics.

Have you ever felt merino wool? It is like silk. I will never wear cotton undershirts again.

Most definitely very fine wool, but I don't know I've ever heard compared to silk. Glad you enjoy it for your undies however. I confine it my hose. The only wool I can tolerate against skin on my torso is cashmere.
