Hi Everyone,

This is my first post. I'm very excited that I found this message board. I've been looking for something like this for a while.

Like many other guys on this board, I'm getting married soon and would like to wear a dark gray suit for the wedding. After spending a long time searching this board and various other places on the internet, I found out about BB Fitzgerald suit and decided to try it on. Most suits look pretty big and ridiculous on me, but this one is the first one that I've tried that looks pretty decent.

Since this is a slim suit, I'm having a tough time figuring out how long the suit should be. The lady at Brooks Brothers was saying that the bottom of the coat should be at my thumbs. If that's the case the 36R would be the one. But when I tried it on, it looked like I was wearing a dress. I tried on the 36S and initially I liked it a alot more but my fiancee said it looked weird because it exposed my crotch or something... haha. I looked at alot of slim suits online and it seems that a lot of people wear them short.

I hope to seek y'alls expert opinion in what size I should choose. The pics below are pretty crappy. I forgot to bring a camera so I had to use my phone.

Sorry again for the crappy pics. Should I go back and take some better ones? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello. I couldn't quite make out what you meant by "wearing a dress" with the R. It looks like the S buttons a little higher on you.

A few notes to help you:

(A) You should only button the top button (or the middle in a 3 button). It looks like you have both buttoned on the R. Just button the top and see if it makes a difference in how you feel.

(B) Don't worry about the length of the coat relative to your arms.

Go with what you feel looks best on you. At the end of the day, you'll need to be comfortable with the appearance. The S appears to be a better fit from the pictures, but it's hard to tell.

If the only thing keeping you from it is the "length should be at the thumbs" then purchase it. That's one of those things they tell sales people that isn't really true.

The 36S looks a bit better, and you look happier in it. One reason it looks better is that the sleeves are shorter - the 36R might be fine too when you get the sleeves shortened. I found I had to push the BB tailor to shorten mine enough, you want .25 to .5 inches of cuff showing.

You might want to have them take in the waist a bit on either one if you feel like it is loose there. One way to tell if the waist is loose is that you should be able to just fit your fist into the waist of the coat with it buttoned.

Congrats and have fun!!

Thanks for the replies and the congratulations!

Ya, I buttoned 2 of the buttons on the R. I did that to see if it would make the bottom of coat not as wide. But I guess that's not the right thing to do... hehe. I did only button the top one for the S picture though.

I'm leaning towards the S now. I remember feeling a bit more comfortable in it... but not sure if that's because the R hasn't been altered. Like you guys said... from the pics, the S looks better fitted for me. I'll do what you guys suggested and shorten up the sleeves and take the waist in a little bit.
