I find it a suitably relaxed mode for summer wear. It's much like wearing a long-sleeved polo shirt under an odd jacket at other times of the year, though summer allows one a wider palate of colors from which to choose safely.

A high quality polo shirt with enough collar with a SB blazer, why not? In imagining it, I can't quite see it with a DB blazer. And of course, I'd wear it buttoned, or with an ascot. I think you would have to pay close attention to the textures of the shirt and jacket too. I would want a polo shirt fabric with a dressier look, certainly not one that was washed out.

I think it's fine for causal occasions - though i don't like the popped collar look. There are finer polo shirts out there - lisle or pima cotton interlock that look nice under a blazer or sport coat. I think you could even wear a pique polo under a hopsack blazer to a dinner at a causal restaurant or for drinks at an outdoor bar.

Wearing an ascot is, of course, an entirely different issue. And while in general I admire them very much (though still lacking the necessary moxie to experiment with them), I don't admire them when worn with a polo shirt even if you're also wearing a jacket. My rule is:

ascot+button-down shirt and jacket = the classic mode
ascot+polo shirt sans jacket = quasi-1940s movie star on location in Mojave
ascot+polo shirt with jacket = don't think I've ever seen it before; ergo possibly less than classic, if you see what I mean.

Casual summer dinners, drinks occasions, and the like are what this mode is meant for--in very good taste, I would say, always dependent on circumstances, of course.

But please don't pop your collar.

I think it could look okay. I don't do it often, but have done it. I would avoid the collar popping for anyone over the age of 23 or so, I suppose. The collar-popping on someone older would look like someone is trying really hard to be "cool" or "creative."

On someone younger - oh well, they're young.

We prefer layering 4 or 5 popped collars and topping with a patchwork madras plaid sportcoat in no-shame colours. Too ku fo sku, du! Pink Pants Rule!!!! Muf agrees totally......

Here is a pic of me with a long sleeve polo on under a tweed jacket. Of course with the dark tee shirt on under the polo it's kind of hard to see much. I'm sure this isn't most folks here's cup of tea, but it's how I dress for something like dinner in a casual dining restaurant like TGI Fridays.

And I'm 59 years old and baldheaded on top so I am allowed to wear the cap. :icon_smile_big:

Cruiser

^ Cruiser, that is a nice look. I also liked your dressier look as the MC at a Memorial Day service, posted in another thread. To my eye, you look more distinguished (or perhaps less eccentric ;) !) without the cap...but, a good look, either way!

I think it looks fine with a soft shouldered blazer. A structured shoulder seems to clash with the casual nature of a polo.

On the other hand I have had a strange experience with a corduroy blazer and a polo. I was actually taken into custody for showing up at the court house because I wore this. This was not before a judge just stopping by the clerk's office. Some people grasp at any excuse to step on your rights. Watch out for anti American fashion critics in SC.

With that said, it should be a great, comfortable outfit for spring and summer.

^^ TRAD ^^
Trad airplaner who didn't have enough room in the suitcase.
Now it's 'in'.

Cary Grant used to pop the collar. Now that it is a fad, I can't do it -- too bad...

With a blazer, a long sleeved polo is better.

I really don't like the look. On young people, it looks sloppy. On older people it looks fogeyish. Please - just wear a slightly more causal shirt. Not a polo!
