Google searches give me conflicting information on what colors are earth tones. I am sure that brown and muddy orange hues are included. But what about greens? I am a Summer with green eyes who enjoys wearing pastel greens and non-bright medium and dark shades of green. Given that earth tones supposedly drown me out, I need to know if there are greens I should avoid.

I am a winter of our discontent with green eyes and the only colour I avoid is mauve, a sort of Volvo brake shim pad grease meets Gerber baby food. Wear green with a glean in your green eyes, except on Saint Patrick's day. That stuff that looks like leftover glitter from a gay production of OZ and made in China is beyond the pale.

As they used to say in the New Yorker, no vivid writing, please. ;)

Sure. Greens, golds, rust, olive, orange, some yellows, some reds, all shades of brown.

I would say some oranges and some greens are earth tones. Peach orange is probably not an earth tone. Pastel greens, like mint and sea form, are likely not earth tones, either. This picture shows what I think of as earth tones. I don't think they are advising me to stay away from all greens, just moss green.

Who exactly are the 'they' you're referring to with such authority? It always amazes and amuses me when some people assert their own 'authority' on these matters, what exactly are 'their' qualifications?

A long winded, cynical way of saying that you might experiment with all the colors of the rainbow, spend a jolly good afternoon in a good mens store, and see what looks best to YOU, to your eye.

The founder of this website, for one, is an authority I trust. Andy admits he breaks the rules for his season from time to time, though. I have found that the recommended do's and dont's for my season are fairly accurate. Bright colors, darker earth tones, and black tend to look too severe on me. I sometimes break the rules because I like certain items so much. I'll wear a black winter jacket or a tan windbreaker. Still, I primarily buy clothes that suit my season and my tastes.

You may, however wind up looking like an extra from Bozo's Circus.

Get a copy of "Color for Men": the advice there is sound for good seasonal colors.

Earth tones to me are any colors that could conceivable occur in a landscape. This includes dark reds, greens, browns, and blues, along with lighter pastels of the same.

I think the key is low saturation values.

I also don't buy into that you-are-a-season BS.

Can you please tell me, in this context, what do we mean by "season"?
A person's "season" is based on their skin tone, eye color, and hair color. Fashion experts say that certain colors complement these features better than others. Some colors will drown you out. Take a look at the checklist on the bottom of this page to determine your season.

Thank you. I will look at that.
