So who makes the most traditional Duck Calls & Lanyards?

Was going to get one for a friend for a DU dinner and solicit some ideas.

The sheer variety of duck calls available these days boggles my mind. My favorite is an old triple reed Shure Shot. A b*tch to get into tune, but when you do it has tone I really like. It's definitely not considered an "in" call these days. The acrylic bell shaped ones seem to be most popular.

As far as lanyards go mine's an old boot lace, so I obviously have no business answering, BUT I'd start with the usual suspects - Cabelas, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain.

Maybe someone else knows a quaint artisan call and lanyard maker out there somewhere..

Macks Prarie Wings has some "tradish" items in their catalog from time to time. I would try there first for a nicer, maybe leather, lanyard. Cabelas also offers some tradish things too.

There is a HIGH END ($$) hunting and fly fishing store in Nashville called Game Fair (gamefairltd.com) and although they do not really list things online you maybe able to call them to see what they offer. They are nice folks and maybe able to put you on to a "nicer" lanyard maker.

As for calls, that is very tricky. What I would consider trad would not be something that most hunting stores offer. Sometimes you can run across really nice hand carved, inlayed calls that are truly works of art, but these are typically not in stores or online. Also, different call makers cater to different regional needs. What works best in wooded areas, may not be the same for open praries, or open water, like the chesapeke bay, for example. That being said, in my neck of the woods people seem to prize Glynn Scobey and Johnny Marsh calls.

Having grown up surrounded by these sorts of things, one would expect me to be able to reel off a long list of potential offerings, but in my honest observation "trad" and most duck hunting apparel sties are two things that do not go together any more.

Depending upon your budget, I found this website that makes custom lanyards. Primarily for upland birds, but they also make some for waterfowl. Simply beautiful work...

As for as duck calls go, I would suggest that you start looking on ebay for an old traditional wooden call. If he is a duck hunter, he probably already has a favorite call, so this would simply be a collectible. Personally, I use a Wiley Duck Call, not trad, but truly an innovation in duck calls.

On another note, if he is a hunter then he might like a unique gift such as duck band. I gave my friend that I duck hunt with one of these souvenir bands this year for Christmas.

I had a great day today. Very traditional flooded green timber hunt in Arkansas (3 mallards, 1 Black Duck, and 1 Wood Duck).

I feel like lanyards are just things you pick up over time. I mean, there are cool ones out there, but I always fear ordering one because I'm not a great caller. It just kind of seems like all bag/no game. I blow this, which I like. RichNTone makes some great looking calls, too, particularly . Anyone used that?
