Hi Folks,

I like some gift ideas for Groomsman. My only thoughts were cufflinks or leatherman tools. In the case of the tool, I don't think it would be a good idea since they can't take it on the airplane.

Any ideas?

Paul

With regards to the leathermen, you could give it to them at the wedding and then have them mailed. I don't think that would be inappropriate.

Cufflinks are a good idea, although not everyone wears french cuffs. Flasks are rubbish, I have several and none have ever been used. I say go with the leatherman.

The gifts I received that I found the most useful were high quality pocket knives (Victorinox makes a nice "higher end" version of their classic pocket version) and a Lamy pen. These weren't the most expensive gifts I received, but were definitely the most useful. I actually received the Victorinox knife and Lamy pen from the same wedding, and use both daily to this day.

I did receive some expensive exotic/esoteric gifts, but those were more catered to the taste of the groom than myself. But remember, it's the THOUGHT that counts!!

I thought about it some more.

None of the groomsmen own french cuff shirts. Cufflinks would be useless.

Only one of the groomsmen actually drink. I am not fond of flask an way.

I got the impression that no on would like pens.

Leatherman seems to get my vote so far. In addition, I was thinking of a USB drive or some neat small gadget, but then again this is because I am a geek.

Case Knives

You may want to consider giving a Case Knife instead of a Leatherman. I would considere a Case a much more classic knife and for the price nothing surpasses their quality, look or long lasting edge.

I received this (in 256 MB size) at a job interview and it's probably the best "small token" gift I've ever received. I can't stand extra things on my keyring, but this is remarkably unobtrusive and endlessly useful.

The best groomsman gift I ever received was a simple money clip. I've been in several wedding parties and it's the only gift I can even remember.

I think the Leatherman is a good idea, especially if you can get it engraved. I don't have one, but I know tons of people who use them all the time. I'm at the point in my life where whenever I'm doing the kind of work that requires one of the tools in the Leatherman I'm also close enough to my tools to just get the right tool.

Depending on your budget, some kind of men's jewelry--chain (probably not gold, but you could get a nice silver chain), a watch, or a nice wallet would be appropriate. My wife and I received a nice pair of copper (or are they brass?) beer mugs for being in a wedding, and we still have them.

When my son got married he and his wife gave each of the groomsmen individual gifts, which was also quite nice.

Or--and I know this is way out there, and probably will meet with its deserved share of derision--matching tattoos. You could make a whole event of it when you all go in to get your ink. Obviously you really have to know how this would play, but at least it would be different.

The problem with ties is that not every guy wears them.
What guy doesn't at some point in his life need to wear a tie? There are certainly many who don't need to wear one daily--I don't--but men in all walks of life and at nearly all socioeconomic levels have some need for a necktie.

We all have weddings, funerals, graduation ceremonies, piano recitals, interviews, places of worship, etc., to go to, after all.

Ahhh...if only people actually wore ties to these places nowadays...:icon_smile_big:

Actually, I don't think a tie is a bad idea either. Personally I would shy away from a USB drive: many people probably already have them, and I find them a little too utilitarian for such an event.

Don't know what your budget is like, and again depends on the taste of your groomsman, but I've seen very nice pocket watches given to the groomsmen. Was very well received, but again, depends on the personality and style of your own groomsmen. Best of luck.

I'm sure in this context, the guys we're talkign about in the wedding party (and even on this board) will have a need for a tie down the line, even if they don't wear it daily, myself included. My point is that I disagree that all men in all walks of life and at nearly all socioeconomic levels have a need for a necktie. No need to argue this point. You think they do, I think they don't. You'll ask me for examples of why I think this is so, and I'll just respond that I'm too lazy to continue this discussion.

Okaaay . . .

If you're too lazy to discuss your claim, perhaps you shouldn't have raised it in the first place when I was simply offering an innnocuous suggestion to the OP.

Other than disagree with me over a trivial issue and refuse to further discuss it because you're too lazy, what exactly have you contributed to this thread?

To the OP: if you don't like the idea of ties or pens, how about silver money clips or leather wallets? You can have either monogrammed if you wish to make it more personal.

Leather

Leather is always good.

I'm sure others have additional suggestions for purveyors.

Specific ideas:

Passport case/wallet. All the above makers sell one. After all, one needs a passport to go to Canada, and who doesn't go to Canada?

Perhaps a tie case for the ties they don't wear:

And if you have the means:

Who wouldn't love this?

Edit: okay, this stuff is expensive. But the passport wallet might be within budget...
