Im no expert in shoes so Im picking more knowledgable forum members on the quality of Churches against Cheaneys. They are sold side by side and the price gap is closing.....they are made in the same factory as well??

Cant beat a bit of Super 80's for bespoke

Cheaneys are made in Desborough, Kettering, Northamptonshire while Church's are made in Northampton.

Different factories, different staff, different traditions. The only commonality is the parent company - Prada.

Not sure that they are similar in price as top range Cheaneys retail for £205 and top range Church's for £365.

Are you 100% sure of that?

In Canada, Church's and Dack's used to be made together for the domestic market (until the closure of the factory), and since Church's, Dack's, and Cheaney are all under the Prada banner, I had assumed that Cheaney sourced for Church's, with different details, etc. I suspect the manufacturing relationship is much closer than is apparent.

I suspect that the entire Northampton shoe industry is a lot more inbred than we realize (I base that on a couple of off-hand comments from someone in the industry in a position to know); and, like you, it would not surprise me if Cheaney and Church's were especially incestuous given their common ownership. However, I do know that there is a Cheaney factory separate from the Church's factory, for whatever that's worth.

The Cheaney shoes that I have seen have all been solid, mid-range British shoes, and I think that they are a better value than Church's shoes at retail prices. That having been said, I like a lot of what I have seen from Church's over the last year or so; and I would be more than willing to give Church's another try if their prices weren't so darn high.

Are Cheney shoes available in the Los Angeles area, preferably near Pasadena?
Thanks,
Gurdon
(When I first saw the thread title, I thought the Vice Presdient had finally done something worthwhile)
I have seen them at the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship in NYC, so it is possible that the Los Angeles might have them.

Many years ago Dacks shoes were made in New Brunswick and Ontario. New Brunswick manufacturing was shut down and then everything was consolidated to Ontario. Some time later Ontario manufacturing was shut down and Dacks branded shoes were imported from England (made by Cheaney) and a cheaper line from Mexico.

But, as far as I know the Church's that were sold in Canada at the Dacks stores were imported from England. I don't believe Church shoes for the local Canadian market were ever made in Canada.

Looking for monks

made by Church - with two small buckles - I heard these were made recently as part of the fashion line. Anybody know the model?

One of my Dutch banking aasociates was wearing these and he commented (wearing a Burberry navy coat) - "British tradition in clothing is very important for European bankers". And it's true - these guys still dress the part.

Some of them even wear contrasting collar shirts all the time.

I saw a pair of Church's black wingtips last Saturday at a local TJ Maxx for $40.00. Too bad they were size 8.
Back in the day (I now realize this was in the Prada sell-off), I purchased 2 pairs of Church's brown, cap-toe shoes for $40.00 each. They were on sale at the local Marshall's with the UK size on them and people didn't know what they were. I was quite happy to snap up some UK 8's and take them home.

I've also seen a lot of suits mis-sized there with the Euro sizing instead of the American sizing.

To the question, though, with the lines that I have, mainline Church's and Ambassador Cheaneys (I think?), the Cheaneys are probably better shoes, more substantial and with a nicer feel to my hand. Now, I would definitely buy Church's again.. I'm just spoiled after the price I paid for those first pairs! Almost the same as when my local Polo outlet used to sell his English shoes....:(

The price of the Cheaney shoes on this link are not listed, but last fall Kent & Curwen listed their Cheaney shoes surprisingly at around GBP 350 ($700), as my fuzzy memory recalls > www.kentandcurwen.co.uk/collection/index.html?position=part_iv Click on the shoes for a slightly larger picture. This is/was way outside the normal price for Cheaney.

Before Prada, a pair of Cheaney's best calf "Royal Tweed" ("Premium Grade") wingtips or cap-toes with combination heels retailed for about 3/4 of the price of similar, yet more refined, Church's "Custom Grade".

When Prada dumped old Church's Store inventory at Marshalls in circa 2001, I scoured the Carolinas and Buckhead^north for xxx pairs @ an average of about $30 a pair. By the time I discovered them most had already been reduced. The Cheaney's had been ignored. New Cheaney on eBay US were not to be found. Within a couple of weeks of my first Cheaney eBay listings, dozens appeared on eBay listed all over the US.
