G'day Guys,

I havent been on here for awhile due to some pretty hefty work and university commitments, however due to a recent redundency - I now have spare time :)

This brings me to my question, do any of the Melbourne Guys here know of or use any tailors in Melbourne - sould someone recommend one to me for some minor suit and shirt alterations. My preference on location is someone in the CBD.

I have become aware of Sarti Tailors on Collins Street, my brief meeting with Peppino cetainly inspired plenty of trust on behalf - however I believe they are mainly a MTM and Bespoke service, and will only do alterations on clothes for existing customers.

If someone could help me out here I would be very greatful.

A bit out of the CBD, but Melbourne Tailors in North Carlton is excellent. It's on the 96 tram line, so it's easy to get to. I've heard of a person cryptically reffered to as 'The Russian' is also good, but I don't know anything about him.

I'd avoid Berensen on Flinders Lane. I had a suit altered there once and they made a mess of it and I've since learned that other tailors have a fairly low opinion of them.

Thankyou Tumbleweeed, I will check out Melbourne Tailors.

Have either of you tried American Tailors in Bourke St? (Right near Pellegrinis). I bought a couple of suits from them at their sale last Christmas, and I was impressed with their attention to detail on the alterations. I certainly look better in their suits than in anything else I've bought. Not sure how they are on repairs etc.

Adrian Carbone is a fantastic tailor.

I've had him alter some suits for me and I've been very happy with the work.
His prices are pretty good too.

It seems that there are a few Melbourners here. We should all meet for a coffee or something.

Cheers,

Lord Berners

I met him this week when I was in Henry Bucks' Collins St store, for whose customers he makes bespoke suits. He seems to have an impressive knowledge of the craft, and tells me that he has been tailoring since he was nine, apart from a brief hiatus spent in the restaurant business. I have yet to see any of his work, apart from the soft-tailored jacket he was wearing, and which I assume was his own.

Well with the credentials you just gave I will have to check him out. As for the melbourne coffee suggestion, I am all for it... As I recall we were going to do that about 8 months ago, but I got really really busy about the time it was about to happen and just kinda didnt go on the net for ages.

If I recall were you not going to university ? - I seem to remember you having a lovely discourse with Marc_au about particular instruments and musicians ? How is it all going this year ?

Sorry CaliforniaDreamer I have not tried American Tailors... but i you say they did a good job on the alterations I am sure they must be pretty decent at repairs. It is alterations I want done anyway.

Yeah, that's right. I'm actually deferring a year at the moment but I am studying music privately. (and, I suspect, learning more that I would be were I in an institution.)

When/what times/etc are people free if we are really interested in this meeting thing?

I for one have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off at the moment.

But I haven't a thing to wear.
Dont worry, I forgive you in advance, to tell the truth I do not as yet have much to wear either... Perhaps the meeting could include a brief tour of the better sartorial spots for getting a bargain in melbourne... I would be all for this as I still do not know the CBD that well at all yet being stuck out at Glen Waverley.

Because of a recent retrenchment, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are good for me too atm, depending on seminars/user groups/job interviews of course. Wednesday 20th is a good day, but I am unavailable from 2-4:30pm

Hi,

I'm afraid Wednesday the 20th is out as it's my girlfriend's birthday. After that, I'm going up to Sydney for a few weeks holiday.

Tuesday the 19th anyone?

Cheers,

I once used the old guy at Toorak Village.

Don't make that mistake.
Dont intend to make mistakes like that :p, hence the asking about tailors.

Tuesday the 19th is fine with me... or should we delay for like a month and put a proper announcement in to pick up all the melbourne guys ?

Harley

That sounds like a better idea. A month or so is good. The more the merrier.

If it's just run of the mill alterations and repairs then City Tailoring in the Century Building on Swanston St are OK and well priced.

A little more 'advanced' might be Armando Marchesi in Queen Street. He is very good (he's 'my' tailor and has done some excellent suits for me). Although he is primarily a bespoke tailor he will do the more 'advanced' alterations - re-cutting of jackets etc. His prices are quite reasonable. If you're at all nervous about approaching a new tailor I would be happy to arrange an introduction.

I'm up for the coffee meeting. I'm in the CBD so with a reasonable notice can manage most days (and there are some good coffee spots down my end of town).

Aus_MD - we should time the coffee meeting for when you're in town??
