Where in Manhattan can I find truly ace-quality shoe repair? I have a pair of Zegna/Ferragamo sleek black leather chukkas that were resoled in a workmanlike but clunky fashion last time out, without the hidden channeling of the original sole. I want my hidden channels back! Many thanks in advance for replies.

There's a place on 55th Street (north side of street) between 5th & 6th Ave. They work on high end shoes. Prepare to stand in line as they are quite busy. I've only used them for shoe shines.

If the "place on 55th" is Shoe Service, be advised: I took a pair of Lobbs - bespoke - to the Lobb store on Madison, asking who might put steel tips on, rather than sending them back to London. They sent them to Shoe Service where they were massacred beyond all reason.

Madison between 80th and 81st on the West side. Same block as Peter Elliot. Best in NYC.

Although they came highly recommended I recently had a bad experience at Jimmy's and it was merely a heel replacement.

So far the best I have found in Manhattan is on Lexington between 71st & 72nd - I believe it is called Empire.

I had a similar negative experience.

For some unknown reason, Shoe Service Plus seems to get a lot of business but the staff are incompetent, inarticulate chooches. (I was fooled by the long line of customers I saw as I walked from my hotel to the office).

The "Plus" in the name must represent their policy of over-charging for inferior service.

Avoid at all costs.

It is interesting that there are a good number of excellent shoe repair shops in NYC.

I have used Jimmy's. On a Saturday it is quite a scene with all of the lovely ladies bringing their Jimmy Choo shoes for modification/repairs.

Jimmy's is excellent, but not more so than my downtown guys:

1. Continental Shoe, 225 Broadway on Barclay Street. Sal is an old world Italian shoemaker. I heard that Sal might be selling, therefore, make sure that he is in residence. Excellent craftsman and a truly lovely man who loves people and shoes. He was the beneficiary of much goodwill and support after 9/11. Believe it or not I used him as an expert witness in a personal injury case. (That's another story for another thread.)

2. Stanley's Cobbler Shop, 115 Broadway on Thames Street closer to Trinity Place. Mention me to Charles, the owner.

Good luck!

Belated Thanks!

My belated thanks to all who replied to my query. I feel reassured that my shoes will be in good hands prior to going back on my good feet. Sorry for the delay in expressing my gratitude; I was forced to go off-line for several days in order to wade through a blizzard of final exam essays, some of which were actually coherent.

You mean the East side :) Some non New Yorkers may endlessly find themselves looking for Madison on the west side...I heard Peter Elliot is closely? Are the rumors true?

Alex meant west side of the Madison Avenue. I was there 2 weeks ago and Peter Elliot was still there.

Who in NYC would you recommend for refinishing uppers? I have a pair of tan shoes that have spots that appear raw, so to speak.
I used Phil's to refinish a pair of uppers - mainly just to strip old polish and start over, the shoe was not damaged (much). He did a decent job. Once you get "trouble spots" on shoes - it will take more than one treatement (even by the experts) to remedy it. Don't expect miracles: take the shoe to any of teh good cobblers mentioned in this post and continue caring for them afterwards. If the shoe manufacturer offers refinishing, do that (AE is $40, a bit more than a cobbler would charge, but worthed, the shoe gets relasted also).
