We have had two days of temperatures over 90 degrees in Kansas, and I am reminded that I need to prepare for hot weather. In a work setting which requires a jacket, dress shirt, and tie, and takes me in and out of the air-conditioning, I have to plan ahead. What have you all found that works in the very hot weather? I am reminded that Brooks Brothers has always said that there is no such thing as a short-sleeve dress shirt.

I don't like to go anywhere without a good undershirt, but especially when it's really hot.

I second the 100% cotton dress shirts and undershirts. The undershirts really do make a difference. And make sure to wear the crew-neck or V-neck and not those awful A-neck "wife-beater" shirts. Not only do they look bad when they show through your shirt, but they don't protect the armpits of your shirt from sweat.

Wear light colors and light-weight suits. Unlined or partially lined suits should be cooler.

I've got the material for a tan linen suit, so I'm going to give that a try this summer as well. I don't suppose seersucker is really worn in Kansas (I've not seen it there), but I could be wrong.

Make sure your shirt collars are well-fitted, as that makes for better ventilation.

Getting used to a suit in hot weather is also important. I think a lot of people just give up after one or two hot days, but I've found that you can get used to it if you wear suits as the weather is getting hotter and stick to it.

BTW, Bulldog, in what part of Kansas do you live? I'm in Kazakstan, but my parents are in Kansas north of Wichita, so I do a lot of my shopping there. Just wondered if you've found any good stores there? It would be great to have an AAAC gathering in Kansas sometime.

I agree with all the above recommendations but I don't think there is really any combination that is going to be comfortable in 90 degree weather......summer is the sartorialists arch nemesis in my opinion :D

I recently acquired 2 very very light sportcoats for summer wear and was reasonably comfortable walking around in NYC this weekend in the 80 degree weather. I personally find silk cashmere blends to be the most comfortable. Even a very thin cashmere sweater over a shirt is very comfortable in the heat but still allows for a neat look.

I try to remember that wool is a great insulator....from heat as well as cold. So I don't have a problem with wearing wool even at 100+++ degrees. But I do remember that if you get hot inside it will keep the heat in. So I do not ever walk very far in the heat with the suit coat on.

Also as I leave an appt I hang the coat up in the car and make certain I drive somewhere quickly even if it is out of the way that will get the car up to speed and hence the AC working well. And I will loosen my shirt sleeve buttons so that the AC can do its darnedest to blow cool air up into the shirt. The biggest killer of heat is if you get your shirt soaked with sweat it may dry out prior to your next appt but it will be wrinkled. So the TShirt is a must.

The other thing I do is try and keep my appts all in one area each day. So I don't have to suffer too many 160 deg F car interior cool down cycles in a day.

And the tan or lighter tropical weight wool suits are very helpful. I have bought a golden tan 70% silk/30% linen suit that I will try this summer. I will let you know how it holds up.

What seems to help is to make extra sure you are wearing proper fitting shirt collars if you must wear a coat in the hot weather. Here in Arizona we are already hitting 90+ daily so I take myself as a hot weather pro. Lots of water, 100% cotton shirts, tropical wool suitings, linen in the mix when possible. Big comfortable tie knots with proper fitting collars.

Warmest regards
