good question....

I personally NEVER wear a tie without a tie clip....It allows you to make a nice "poof" just below the knot that gives a third dimension to your outfit.

I personally wear mine relatively high......i like it to show just a little bit when my jacket is buttoned...so maybe 4-5 in down from the knot id say...

Mine is a simple sterling clip with english markings that I purches from bergdorf last year....

Great accessory for any outfit

In my view, I dont think theres a fixed place to wear the tie clip. It varies based on what you wearing, the look youre trying to accomplish and the width and general shape of your tie.

I wear wider ties and a tie clib cant necessarily get past enough of the edge fabric to the shirts placket for a secure fit. Also I like to have the bar show over the the fastened button of my suit. Especially with a DB jacket Ill wear it higher up so it just peeks over the lapel of my 6 on 2 button stance.

With a vest, I will wear it quite high up so that it does not get tugged off of the tie by the inside of the vest body and lost.

Some men wear it in the middle, on high, and some wear them quite low. The only mistake I can think of from a style point of view is wearing it straight across which makes it more utilitarian and reduces possible aplomb

I think they look best when worn just above the closure of the jacket. The tie clip should not draw too much attention but you should not try to hide it either. The height will vary a bit according to whether you wear a 2 or three button suit. Wear it at an angle and make sure you arrange it so that it holds the tie up just a bit. That will cause the tie to form a small arch between the knot and the clip.

Unless you're placing the tie clip up about chest high (which would look ridiculous), it won't do a very good job of arching the tie at the top. The extra length of tie will just sag down to the clip. The only reliable way to arch your tie is by putting something under it like a collar bar or shirt tab, or perhaps if you wear a high-buttoning vest.

The only reason I ever wear a tie bar is to keep the tie centered when worn under a double-breasted jacket. I never place it where it will show. I think they look dowdy.

You pin it down low and the arch stays up high? I've got to see a picture of this.

To eromlignod, If I thought tie clips looked "dowdy" I would not be posting on this thread. I am not afraid to be seen wearing one, are you?

I have never had any trouble making the tie arch when the clip is worn so it is just visible above the closure of the jacket. Perhaps it is a bit easier when the tie is wide and of heavy fabric. As for height, I suggested wearing the clip in the MIDDLE of the tie, not too high or too low.

Tie clips are an elegant accessory, to compare them to pocket protectors and clip-on's is ridicoulous.

It also matters of course what it is that you're wearing it with. Wear a great tie clip with a yellow short sleve shirt and brown tie and youll look like a nerd. Add it as a detail to a fine suit or sportcoat ensemble and its a great look.

And yes, to clarify, I wear mine just so it shows when my jacket is buttoned and by doing so I maintain an arch at the top of the tie, just below the knot. I've adjusted mine so that it clasps rather tightly as well.

Eromlignod, why are you wasting your time posting on this thread?
Take it easy, Smartsuit; nobody's talking about your mother. I have a right to my opinion and I think tie bars are stodgy. You can embrace them if you like.

I have found over the years that they are not a reliable method to add arch to the upper tie, but I do use them to keep a tie centered in a DB jacket, since it can sometimes have a tendency to migrate to the side. I thought my experience might be of interest to other posters...that's what this little roundtable is for.

I wasn't trying to be mean or accuse you of being dowdy yourself. I apologize if you took me the wrong way.

Yes, I am. I'm also afraid to be seen wearing a pocket protector, white socks and clip-on bowties.
MY what a Snob statement!

Just kidding, Ive been feeling the heat on other threads for my class aware statements so I had to find someone, anyone to hide behind for a moment respite.

Tie clips can be a little dowdy unless fashioned and worn just so. They look good to me, but it is true that there is an army of people who think they are a dated old fogey item. Sometimes you cant fight city hall.

My, what a testy group!

Gentleman,
A tie clip is made for the purpose of keeping your tie next to your shirt if you are not wearing some other device that achieves the same end, like a vest.
If you can make it do other things, that's fine as well.
Personally, I find them annoying.

Anyone for a duel?
