In my sartorial journey, having tried linen after hearing people sing its countless praises, I have come to the conclusion that it is probably by far the most overrated fabric in the history of mankind. Silk is close behind it but linen is by far the most disappointing. I have tried various linen pants and a pair of cotton/linen blend pants to see if they performed well and have a place in my closet. As it turns out, they don't. The drape is horrendous, they're way too flowy, they don't feel nice on the skin, they don't do a good job at all at keeping me cool in warm temperatures, they always look frumpy and never make me look good. Except for a navy linen blouson I have, and an unstructured wool/linen blend sport coat I wish to get in the future, I'm done with linen.
I've found that the only two warm weather types of trousers I want are tropical wool and cotton gabardine. They do a better job at keeping me cool I've found, (even with the tight weave of gabardine) have much better drape, don't look nearly as rumpled, and I have two versatile options for a variety of occasions depending on the formality. As for warm weather shirts, I do have a couple cotton/linen blend Southern Tide shirts I'm trying out which are ok so far, but I probably would prefer 100% cotton in an open leno/giro inglese weave, or a type of basketweave such as Panama.
Sorry linen, but you just don't cut the mustard for me.
