Can someone please recommend a good trench coat? I had my eye on an aquascutum, but they've informed me that no new coats will be forthcoming this year due to supply issues. I know burberry is the classic, but $2k is a bit much for me. This will be a coat that I will wear with a suit, so it needs to be long enough for formal wear.

I have literally spent hours on the internet trying to find a good trench. I will not pay 2k for a Burberry just for the "privilege" of...whatever.

Consider: If, like me, you want a trench that is 100% cotton; falls below the knee at least 2-3 inches; possibly has a wool liner, then Grenfell is the ONLY (I really mean it) option. There is no other trench that fits all these requirements. Aquascutums are 65% polyester; others are too short, not stylish enough; too trendy looking; so slim cut you can barely wear a t shirt under it, etc., etc. I ending up 2 years ago buying a Banana Republic 50% cotton/50% polyester "Heritage" trench which is remarkably nice looking and met all my requirements except for the composition. I basically gave up. I wish I'd saved both time and money and just bought the Grenfell. Lesson learned.

I just spent a bunch of time on the ‘web and I can’t find anything other than the Grenfell.

I know that’s not particularly helpful, but I wouldn’t pay for the Burberry name either given the high-quality option available from Grenfell.

When I was last in Japan they were selling Mackintosh wool trench coats made from Loro Piana storm system wool for $400 Costco. They didn't have my size. They seemed well made when I was looking at them. As was posted earlier they do make cotton coats as well.

I bought a Sealup trench at Last Call last year for about $250 on sale. The style and quality is pretty comparable to modern Burberry, I would say even a little better. The retail on it was supposedly $1,800. I'd never heard of the company before I found the coat, but it seems to have a long heritage and the coats are fully made in Italy.
I found this one at a decent price without much searching ...

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm surprised how difficult it is to find a good trench coat. My preference for a trench coat is that it can be worn year round. Wool top coats are great in the winter but are too hot for other seasons.

I will probably order the Grenfell but there's an option to pay duties tax. I've never seen this before. Any ideas?

Generally, you have to pay duties on items/order originating from foreign lands that are valued at more than $800 USD. Sometimes merchants will include that in the price, sometimes it's excluded and your problem when things arrive. If excluded, the carrier will usually collect it at delivery or bill you. I've received a bill from FedEx before. I've heard plenty of stories about delivery men demanding payment during delivery as well. On occasion, orders can slip through and you'll avoid tax/duties but that's pretty rare. It seems that Grenfell is just giving you the option to deal with it upfront (I've also never seen this option before), which is kind of nice frankly.

Here's a nice Mackintosh from O'Connells. View attachment 35291
I bough this a few years ago and while it seems nice and I've gotten compliments on it, I'm not a huge fan of it. It's a tad pricey.

During a visit to O'Connells a few year ago I made a comment to Ethan about it being so hard to find a good traditional trench coat,. His response was "it's just as hard for us to find any."

I probably would have went with either of these over the above Mackintosh
