My wife gave me a very nice light tan linen sport coat as an early Father's Day present and I'm stumped as to which color pants to wear with it? I'd love to hear your shirt & pants color combo suggestions, thanks.

You could do either navy or a lighter blue, brown but make sure it's quite a few shades darker to allow contrast or a light to medium gray.

That said, the advice would mean more if you could post a pic.

As normal, I agree with SG'S advice but the thing about tan is that it's such a neutral color, that almost everything goes well with it. Depending on the shade of the coat and (as the broken record player that I am) time of day, you should pick your coordinating garments. My favorite colors to pair with it are black or navy blue during the evening and night. During daylight, any color in pastel or similar tone, -that isn't solid grey nor white - will go well; my taste says to stray from pairing tan and solid white or grey, but I'm not adamant about it... I just haven't seen it done well, yet.

Also, a picture with the coat's color would be appreciated :)

Contrast rules. Otherwise, go with what moves you.

White/cream/yellow/seersucker on one end of the spectrum, charcoal/slate blue/olive/darker Madras on the other.

I have an unlined tan linen SC that I've been able to pair with just about anything but khaki chinos. White chinos have actually worked pretty well, as have navy/nantucket red/light green ("seafoam", I guess)/light blue/madras/etc. I've found it to be pretty versatile actually.

As the many excellent suggestions might suggest, it may be easier to find pants that won't harmonize than those that do.

A couple less common choices, if you could find them; willow green and soft canary yellow. Willow green is a medium light shade of green with a lot of grey in it. The yellow speaks for itself. (Though, hopefully, not too loudly.) And I remember fondly a pair of linen ones I had from Paul Stuart about 40 years ago. Very Hamptons for the era, and would still look good.

Shirts can be a lot of things. Let's try a cream colored BD with the green ones. And wear a wine colored figured silk PS. How about a high quality navy cotton polo buttoned at the neck with the yellow, and an earth tone silk or more brightly colored plaid cotton madras PS with the yellow.

I'm wearing a tan (slightly greenish, actually) linen jacket right now with navy chinos, and I have to say I don't like the combination, esp. as the linen is slighty nappy, and the chinos not at all. The medium brown linen here----would look great, I'd imagine, not to mention the blue. Rust or medium gray linen blend, maybe? I like the brown linen; I think it looks suave.

For what it's worth, I'm wearing cotton glen plaid trousers from Bill's Khakis here, that register as sort of medium brown, with a tan linen/silk/wool jacket (a little more finished-looking than linen):

I have a tan / creme color linen jacket that I wear with cotton pants that are a few shades darker and pair it with a light blue OCBD shirt. I use the shirt as my contrasting color.

I also have white trousers that I wear with a white OCBD shirt with AE chili belt and shoes over a creme linen jacket.

If I wore it with navy trousers, I would probably wear a light blue shirt and use my jacket as the contrasting color.
