In the airports, I most frequently see garment bags being carried by guys wearing perfectly-pressed cotton/poly polo shirts and Sansabelt-type trousers. Actually, not frequently at all...garment bags seem to be disappearing, for good reason.

I picked this up last summer at the Longchamp store on 5th Ave. It's moderatly priced, well constructed and has shown no signs of wear despite being shlepped around in cars and airplanes over a dozen times in the past 9 months.
It easily holds 1 suit, 1 SC with trousers and 2 more trousers with siris hung over them on the hanger. The large front pocket will accomodate a couple of folded shirts, underwear, a pair or two of shoes, and belts. A single pair of oxfords can be squeezed into the bottom of the main garment compartment. Filled to this capacity, it folds and compacts nicely to be handily used as a carry-on. It is made of dense duable canvas with leather trim and weighs next to nothing. Very stylish upscale look in the olive canvas with tan leather as shown below.

Two best garment bags I ever had were purchased secondhand. The first was by Lands End when LE made great stuff--it was made in San Francisco, as I recall and built like a tank. I paid about $75 for it from a guy on TOF. I never would have parted with it but I found a Gokey on Craigslist that was in mint condition for $40, so that's what I have now. It has room for a suit, a couple of sport coats and trousers.

A quality garment bag is essential, and the cheap ones just won't work right. Given what clothing costs, you need something ballistic to protect what's inside. You should be able to get a very nice Battenkill on eBay for $200 or less, and I'd seriously consider it. You can check it with no worries and you can also carry it on. They are seriously close to bullet proof.

I've got a fantastic old-school A&F canvas garment bag. I can pack a weekend's worth of clothes and toiletries in it without getting overloaded. My girlfriend actually spotted it as part of a pair for 3.27 from goodwill, one of her best finds, and I gave one to a graduating friend.

Looking to apend less than $200 on a travel garment bag i can use as carry on. Only need to hold two suits, and some accessories. Read good things about the Lat56 but at a $300 price point. Any suggestions.
All my luggage is from LL Bean (Sportsman's Collection), and it is well made and durable. My garment bag is about 25 years old, and still functional. There are newer rolling garment bags but they generally aren't carry-on, and unfortunately, LL Bean don't make the one I have anymore.

While I fully understand your budget, I have found that quality luggage is worth it, given that it lasts. I have used my LL Bean garment bag countless times over the past 25 years, and the leather is a bit banged up from baggage handlers, but it is otherwise in good shape.

If that holds everything you claim it does I'll take one in blue! Very nice and fairly affordable.

I just packed up my bag to make sure I´m giving you the correct info. I put 2 suits, 2 tousers with a shirt over each into the bag utilizing the hanger with handle that comes with the bag, and 3 uncurved, straight velvet coated travel hangers I have purchased seperatly. 2 pairs of strands with plastic shoe trees that I use for travel, and 3 belts went inside the body of the bag. I had room in the outside pocket for a pair of PAs and 2 shirts that I packed in as a roll.

Everything closes securely and the leather handle is available at the top to hold onto nicely. Athough I have found it more comfortable to grab the handle and the hanger hooks at the sme time or the hanger hooks will dig into your knuckles from below. It is nice and compact, the outside pocket bulges out the thickness of the shoes. There is room to stuff a few pair of socks and-or underwear in around the bodies of the suits and a couple of more socks or underwear in the ouside compartment or inside the shoes before you´re starting to push it beyond capacity.

They will replace or repair items that do not wear acceptably. While they do not list a warranty, my sister in law had a crossover bag replace by them after 2 years when the trim frayed. She was very happy with their customer service. I had always thought they were an overpriced ¨designer¨line until visiting their store in NYC last summer. I was pleasently surprised to find their products sturdily constructed, tasteful, and reasonably priced. They have two locations in Toronto which carry their products. As these are not Longchamp stores, the availability of specific items can only be ascertained by calling them. I will post the info below.
