I tried on a striped suit the other day and as it turns out, either dark blue or gray pin stripes look good on me. I'm not sure exactly what the stripe pattern is called, but I love the wider placed stripes that are more faint. Is that 'chalk stripe'?

i want to get a suit in each color but wonder how appropriate they are for other than business wear. Is there a general rule or custom?

Thanks

Pinstripe.
Not for funerals, weddings, nor clambakes.
Purple suits are probably not the best idea, though purple shirts can work.
Welcome to a wider world,

This, and I would add not for the first interview in a job interview process. Chalk stripe is a different type of stripe. I'm sure we could argue, at some length, about whether some patterns are chalk stripe, or rope stripe, but pin stripe is, generally, distinctly a pin stripe.

Pinstripe, which is narrow, like a pin:

Rope Stripe, which is wider, and has a shape resembling a rope:

Chalk Stripe, which looks as though it may have been produced by use of a chalk line. A chalk line is a length of string caked in chalk, pulled taut across the span one wishes to mark, and then plucked like a guitar string, striking the surface, and leaving a line of chalk on the desired surface. Concrete, plywood, what have you. You could argue it looks like it's drawn with chalk, as when marking fabric for cutting, but they've always distinctly looked like chalk lines to me. I believe (but could be corrected) that they are generally wider (the stripe itself, not necessarily the spacing) than a rope stripe.

Not for funerals I understand, but why not weddings?

Weddings are more formal, and so a solid, dark suit is appropriate. Social occasions generally call for a solid suit.
Never been to an non-Catholic Italian wedding in California, have you? Weddings are festive and should be celebratory. Break out the glencheck, the nailhead and the French blue. However, Sr. Bantista's admonition against purple is sound.

When did this myth that striped suits are inappropriate for social occasions start? Certainly, one of our sartorial role models didn't think so.

I have not been to any weddings in California. If the wedding is formal enough to demand a suit, I still think solids are best. There's a little more leeway on colour in the summer, of course.

Jovan,
As with many things, it is more an election of more formality for more serious occasions whereas the pinstripe and checked suits are better presented in business or mardi gra circumstances. Possibly it is only personal preference, but here we are, discussing the finer points of attire when the inexperienced querant only requires affirmation of his epiphany.
Best Regards,

Odradek, for your own wedding, I think one should wear whatever he prefers.

To someone else's, I would err on the side of a little more formal. Now, if, for some reason, my solid suits became unavailable for that day, I would not be overly worried about wearing a patterned one. One guest wore a lovely windowpane suits to my wedding, and I was not offended. One guest who, I suspect, is allergic to jackets and ties, wore an open collar shirt, and I was not offended by that, either, knowing who it was. It is entirely possible he doesn't even own a jacket.

Well, of course you can have a striped trousers with your morning suit at a wedding. However, it's unlikely that regular guest will be in morning dress.
