Hello
My next purchase will be à pair of double monkstraps. I have been looking at two different models: Herring Attlee from their premium line, and Alfred Sargent Ramsey in the exclusive range. I prefer to have them in brown.

Do you have experience with these Shoes? What are the main differences with respect to quality, etc.

Price versus quality

The Herring Attlee costs 255 pounds the Alfred Sargent Ramsey 390 pounds, à difference of 135 pounds.
I suppose my question is: What will I get for the extra 135 pounds?

The Attlee is a Cheaney made shoe. The Alfred Sargent is oak bark soled.

I think you pretty much get value for money either way. The AS are supposed to be great shoes for the money.

I'm liking the look of the AS:

Better than the Herring:

If you can afford the AS, I'd go with that. But it's never fair to compare shoes in different price levels. Unless the price level is 'bloody expensive', and these are not.

Italigente

À third option would be the swedish brand italigente, that has à small shop in Göteborg. They have à nice monkstrap, on à pricelevel beteeen the other two (395 euro). They make their Shoes in Italy, but I am not sure if it of the same quality as the Alfred Sargent shoe.

I would go for Carmina, sells them. € 440.

I would also recommend Loake Cannon, a monkstrap I've not seen before in their famous 1880 collection. £ 164 without VAT from pediwear.

Or Crockett and Jones Lowndes, which I personally have.
(Excl VAT: £283.33)

Italigente

Here are the specifications of the Italigente shoe:

Blake/Rapid construction with double leather sole
Traditional glazed box-calf leather upper.
Durable double leather outsole (ecologic tanned)
Leather insole with cushion of natural latex inside
Premium calf linings
Natural cork layer between the insole and the outsole for maximum comfort

I suppose that Blake Rapid is the italian equivalent of Goodyear welted, but I am not sure...

It's a different kind of construction that usually means a slimmer sole. Some nice drawings from Bexleys web page:

The construction sounds ok but they are no bargain at that price with plenty of known manufacturers available at the same price point.

I have the Ramsey's and find them to on par with any other high quality shoe I have, namely C&J, Carmina, Peal & Co, etc.

I really like the 99 last too, its a bit more rounded than the Carmina Simpson last or the C&J dble monks.

I have no problem highly reccomending the AS Ramsey it is an excellent and beautify shoe.

Good Luck, jtb

Which shoe is that?

I could buy Vass for 440€. What grade are those?

Agree with all that double monk straps look cool. Practically speaking. I find that they're a pain to buckle up and so rarely wear mine.
