Dear All,

My wife and I have been invited to a 50th birthday party. The honoree was born in 1960, his wife, our hostess thought we would celebrate by dressing in garb from 1960.

Other than getting lucky by thrifting the appropriately sized suit, what can one wear to dress the part? I have some tapered flood-like khakis that may work, but I'm note sure with what?

Any idea would be terrific.

All the best-

Khakis, white socks, penny loafers, ocbd- maybe a knit tie. Also, browline glasses.
This really sounds more like a nerd costume than 1960...
Dammit!!! That means I must dress in a nerd costume every day!! :icon_smile_big:

I have not seen any around for a long time but, if you could lay your hands on one of those flower themed, wall paper print shirts, or a Madras sport shirt, they were pretty common in the mid 1960's. Also, I was wearing OCBD's back then, that were not much different than the ones I currently wear.

Youngster:I was about to write the same thing.... I guess, I was not quick enough with the response. :)

Also, you should ask the hostess what she had in mind. Feel free to feign ignorance of 1960's fashion and ask her "so what should I wear?" She's the one you really have to make happy- remember, its a party, not a historical recreation. You don't get points for historical accuracy, only for having fun.

I'd love to find aMad-Men era suit to add to the atmosphere, but that will be tough, therefore the khakis idea. I know one fellow is going to wear his WDJ. I may end up in a blazer, white shirt and skinny tie. I do like the madras shirt idea, but the venue is "nicer" than that, so the noodling continues.....

If only you asked this question 7-8 months ago, because Brooks Brothers was actually selling Mad Men limited edition suits late last year.

I've thought a lot about this, especially with the clean cut look making a comeback in The World of Fashion and it seems to my eye that hair and eyeglasses tend to make the biggest difference when making someone look anachronistic. Short of comical bell-bottoms or broad-shouldered power suits, there's not often a lot in the proportion or coloring of a garment that really screams out "Hey, I'm from the 19__'s!" but hairstyles and eyeglass choices always seem to drive the point home.

ASF, I salute you for treating 1960 with the respect it deserves, as a hgh-water mark of American culture! The future never looked brighter than it did in 1960. These delightful pictures bear that out :icon_smile_big:

LOL. We were shooting up like weeds in those days, but nice white socks filled the gap between pants-bottom and penny loafers.

Then go with high water khakis, white socks, pennies slim ocbd and a black square ended knit tie. If you have a slim sack, everything would be perfect.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will make a trip to the local thrift shop and see what they have. Perhaps a trip to BB to check out their seersucker or madras jackets will be in order. Silver has two, but at $575, I doubt I'd puller the triller.

Any additional suggestions, let 'em rip.

For that era's casual attire, you could google photos of American Graffiti. I believe it was set in 1962. For a take with better photography, you could look at the pictures of astronauts in the American Trad men section. There are significant stylistic differences between the two.
