Depends upon the weather and the venue.

Here in the Hamptons - and many other resort areas - boat shoes are considered the norm for all but the more formal occasions. During the day on warmer days, no socks are expected. For casual dinners or clubbing, they are seen both with and without socks.

There are soooo many posts and threads addressing this already.

Most say no, some say yes.
And others say Depends.

Wearing yours today?

Boat shoes, that is. :icon_smile_wink:

I Shall continue wearing socks with my Boat shoes, until I elect to go "commando" with the rest of my body parts...and at this late date, I doubt we are going to see that happen! ;)

PS: I am well beyond the 50 year point!

It depends on the circumstances. I frequently wear my boat shoes as casual shoes with khakis or jeans, and I wear them with socks. If I'm boating, at the beach, or somewhere similar, I'll omit the socks.

It's well known that ankle-high socks are ok during the day. (Never black.)
Just personal opinion, but I hate trainer (proper term for top-of-shoe socks) socks.

Maybe a tad higher after 6PM to maybe 4" above the ankle, and preferably with a bright color.

And never, in any case wear calf-highs with boat shoes.
I don't usually dress with a ruler, but if by "calf-highs" you mean no mid-calf socks, I'm afraid you're just not my type at any hour of the day or night. :icon_smile_wink:

Mid-calf socks, preferably rumpled downward a devil-may-care tad, would be my choice.

surely shoes without socks fior any lenght of time is not good hygiene.

BTW has anyone heard of an Italian shoemaker called mdc which makes boat shoes?
The hygiene factor should not really be a major concern unless someone suffers from hyperhidrosis or bromhidrosis (aka sweaty feet and smelly feet:icon_smile:). For others, a simple application of a quality absorbent powder sprinkled in the shoe can be beneficial.

I personally do not wear socks with my boat shoes, because when wearing them for the intended use, wet socks are a feeling that give me the "willies".

Additionally, since I like my shoes to fit "just right", I actually purchase my boat shoes to fit me without socks, and if I wear a pair of socks they simply don't feel "right".

But I don't believe there's really a fashion rule, and it's simply a matter of preference. And as per Mr. Kabbaz, it obviously DEPENDS on your preference.

As per the cliche, that's why they make chocolate and vanilla.
