Modern Tailor has some great fabric choices and their prices are fantastic! I ordered the Ivory and Blue Check fabric of 100% cotton for only $39.95!! Lots of options in an easy to navigate site. 7 button front including the collar button and they offer mother of pearl buttons as options.

They update their fabric collection every 15 days. They just launched a line of silk ties, and their cufflink collection offer mother of pearl, silk knots, stainless steel, and more, plus will be adding suits in the near future!

I got my first delivery from MT a couple of weeks ago... I was impressed for the price, though I would order a few changes if I did it over again:

a. The "standard" body fit is much larger than that to which I am accustomed. During the MT order process, they have you measure a well-fitting shirt in several places and they attempt to duplicate the sizing, however while the chest fit well, there was little taper down the sides. Perhaps a few additional washings will help, but if I were to order again I would certainly request the "trim fit" option. The shirt which I was measuring was a standard fit Charles Tyrwhitt.

b. The spread collar option was somewhere between Windsor and cutaway, but wasn't really either. I would be interested to see how their "standard" collar looks and wears.

c. French cuffs come standard with the small button just north of the cuff (I'm not certain what this is called). A future order would include a request to omit this extra button.

Overall, however, I think they're excellent shirts for the price. The stitching appears to be of fine quality, sleeve length and collar were true to size, and the options (including MOP buttons) were excellent.

Thanks, Mr David.

Any idea where the shirt(s) are made? What about fabrics? Obviously at the price point mentioned not much can be expected, but I am just curious.

Also, it's interesting that you don't like the gauntlet button -- it drives me crazy when not present.

The opening above the cuff, or more correctly, the facings in the opening above the cuff are called a placket, and the button is referred to as a placket button. The idea is that when a gentleman wishes to roll up his sleeves he prefers the give afforded by a longer placket, but when the sleeves are not rolled up he would prefer the longer placket did not gape open inelegantly; hence the button.

Shirts are made in China and shipped directly from the factory.

Gauntlet button - yes; that was what I was referring to - couldn't think of the name for the life of me! They're not on any of my other shirts and I suppose I'm simply accustomed to their absence. To each his own, however I pointed it out to highlight that I wasn't provided an option for it via MT's ordering process. Based on my limited experience with them, I would assume that one could request just about any customization he wishes, but it would require a certain proactivity.

Mr. David,
When you describe the collar that you ordered as a "spread collar", was that the cutaway collar option on their website?
Thanks,
Richard

They could really do with better/real pictures of the collar and cuff options, as well as having a choice of back pleats.

That is correct. Sorry; I should have been more specific.

I agree completely. Perhaps someone on the forum with a more direct relationship with MT could pass this suggestion to them. Based on MT's illustrations, it's difficult to guess exactly how the collar shapes will translate to actual garments. Sample pictures would be much better.

My Observations

My first shirt from Modern Tailor just arrived.

My thoughts are:

  • nice cloth
  • quite well finished but not as well as my Jermyn Street shirts (if you look closely you can see the bubbles in the fused cuffs - at least they are on the inside)
  • the fit was a little tight for me but I can fix that next time by sending them my shirt measurements rather than body measurement
  • there are a large number of possibilities and the process may require some fine tuning - I would suggest buying one shirt first then adjusting things
  • the great advantage is made to measure with a huge number of options for a reasonable price
  • if you fit a standard size shirt and don't need/want MTM then the clearance prices from Tyrwhitt and Lewin online are often lower than a Modern Tailor shirt given the current weakness of sterling (wonder where these are made?)

cheers

Nice looking shirts.. I've ordered shirts from moderntailor before and was impressed with the speed of the delivery... I got mine shirt in two weeks and it took me the 2nd try to get my shirts exactly the way I wanted it but it was well worth it in my opinion. I would never buy anything other than MTM shirts again simply because of the fit and the choices of fabrics and styles.

I have four Modern Tailor shirts and I've also been impressed with quality and the surprising speed of delivery. They won't blow your mind, but for the $40-$60 range they're a pretty good value, and they have a reasonable choice of fabrics (including some rather bizarre patterns). Anyone have any experience with Modern Tailor suits?

Fusing doesn't go on the inside, so I don't see the problem. There's liable to be some puckering on the inside of a cuff -- those aren't bubbles.

I'm getting happier with my MT non-iron OCBD. They nailed the fit from my measurements of a well loved shirt and the service was exceptionally fast. The non-iron fabric had an almost plastic feel to it, but after several washings has gotten more supple. Looks fine, just didn't feel quite right at first.

Modern Tailor - Initial Impressions

I came across the link for Modern Tailor through the forum and read a few reviews, including Andy's, so thought i would give them a try. Since I've gotten so much information from others who have taken the time to post similar "reviews", i figured that I would pass on my experiences.

I originally started with a fabric swatch purchase. The web-site indicated that shirt and suit swatches were available and I requested both. Unfortunately, they only sent the shirts and forgot to send the suit swatches! I went ahead and chose a fabric for a shirt order and they indicated that they would include the suit swatches with the order. However, as of today the shirt arrived and still no swatches!? Of course this is a minor issue and I'm sure a fast e-mail will rectify it. One last swatch comment - about thirty percent of the swatches had no label/ reference to style, number, thread, etc. - essentially unknowns - Only approximately twenty-five percent of the fabrics were confirmable/ available on the web-site. Obviously, fabric supplies come and go and it is not reasonable to believe all can be maintained on hand, but ultimately such a small percentage did not justify the swatch purchase.

Processing and shipping of my shirt, as well as communication, was incredible! I placed the order approx. 4p.m. Jan.12 and received it Jan.20. I did pay an extra $5 for expedited production but it was well worth it for a custom shirt. I actually requested a late change for shoulder pleats from a plain back after I placed the order and Modern Tailor accommodated it!

I chose to measure a shirt instead of taking body measurements. (I copied a Lands End Custom shirt)
Fabric - 90038, Fine Blue Twill, Non-iron (I generally do not have good luck with twill, but wanted a non-iron fabric and this was one of the only "plain" non-iron choices). The fabric is actually quite nice with a tight weave. I'm not quite sure how this is considered "non-iron" as after one washing (cold water, delicate, hanger dry) it has stayed incredibly wrinkled! There is nothing non-iron about it!
The details seem nice - good stitching, nice buttons (i only requested plain), a few loose threads here and there but overall as good as many of the other shirts I own (BB, Lewin, RL, etc.)
There were a couple of things to be desired. A few of the measurements were "off" - it should be noted that the differences were within the stated tolerances that the web-site indicates - unfortunately, since this shirt is MTM and I chose "slim fit" , the measurements that were "short" (yoke 1", sleeve length .5", chest 1") give the shirt a slightly tight feel (pre-shrinking!?) Additionally, the cuff was large by about .25".
The only detail that I would say is an "issue" for me is the collar. The height is good. The points measured 3.5" - which for my taste is too long. Unfortunately, there is no option given - but, I have updated my shirt profile and requested in the notes that the collar be shortened - so we'll see. Additionally, the web-site indicates that the cutaway collar is similar to a Windsor collar - I would say it was similar to a CT classic, Lewin Prince of Wales, or even JAB's spreads - the spread is definitely not as cutaway as the Windsors on my other shirts.
This being the first shirt, fine tuning is to be expected. A question that i will have to pose to Modern Tailor is how to adjust for the "tightness"? - Do I make additions to my measurements or assume that the next shirt will feel less tight if it is brought up to the actual measurements?

Overall, I am pleased with the first shirt and with Modern Tailor. The process is smooth and easy with a lot of customization available (especially their accommodation of individual notes, etc.) and with the speed of production and delivery I will most likely order a couple more shirts.

Non-iron fabric should be avoided if you're going to the trouble to get a MTM shirt, but that's just my opinion...
