The standard reply here is that the people over at the Style Forum are the undisputed experts on denim. Their Streetwear and Denim forum will answers any questions you might have and more; if you're serious about denim, get ready to spend a lot of time reading:

The short answer is that the best makers of denim are small artisinal shops in the U.S. and Japan, with some strong names in Europe. I won't pretend to know all the brands, but you can check the Denim Bar and see what brands they carry; all the brands they carry are very high quality, although there are a few brands that they don't have (e.g., some of the specialty Japanese stuff):

"Quality" can be defined in several ways when talking about something like the ubiquitous denim jeans. Some will define it as construction, some as fit and appearance, while others will use a cost/use analysis. Obviously if you are a construction worker or cowboy on a ranch you will let construction and durability be your guide while if you are someone who only wears them with a blazer to the club on Saturday night you will lean more toward how they look in this capacity. There is no one size fits all answer to this question.

I wear jeans a lot, just about every day in the same manner that most here would most likely choose chinos. They are just everyday casual wear for me, usually with sneakers. (I'm retired) On the other hand I do pair these same jeans with a sport coat or blazer on a regular basis. I have found the best jeans for MY purposes to be simple classic Levis, Lees, or Wranglers. They are durable, inexpensive (< $50), and tend to fit me well, especially Lees that cost me less than $30 a pair. You may have to experiment with fit among several brands and cuts.

On the other hand if I did not wear jeans as frequently as I do I might at least look at some of the higher end jeans. I don't know if I would like them better than what I now wear, but I would look; however, given that I wear them just about every day, all day, I'll stick with what I know to be durable and inexpensive. Your results may vary as the commercial says. I'm sure others will be along with some advice on the more high end jeans.

Zegna

I really like Zegna jeans. Not Zegna "Sport", but the main line Zegna. Very classic--nothing fancy/trendy about them.

The fabric is quite soft and comfortable, and so far, they have been wearing quite well.

Being tall with an athletic build, I've found the best jeans to fit me are Mavi. They hold up extremely well and I am quite please with them. One pair is about 4 years old, the other about 2 years old.

Denim depends...

on what style you are looking for. Some brands do better straight/skinny fits, some do better drak denim, some do better baggy jeans...but by all means, no fancy dandy stuff on the pockets, or the legs.

Now I'm thinking about Gucci or something like that
I am by no means a denim expert, but my guess is for Gucci jeans you are paying 80% for the label and 20% for quality (if they are indeed quality jeans). The denimheads over at styleforum throw around brands like APC, Nudies, Diesel...not saying those are the best jeans out there, but there are proponents of those brands over there. I also don't know how difficult it would be for you get ahold of some of these brands where you live.

In short, I'm not sure my post was helpful at all

My take:

(1) Levi 501 shrink-to-fits. Cost $35 and are classic, hard to beat.

(2) APC New Standards. Like an upgrade to the 501s in terms of denim quality, price, etc.

(3) Anything above that, and you're in denim fanatic territory and what's better becomes like arguing over whether drakes, sam hober, charvet or hermes make better ties.

When I first discovered what some Japanese brands, like Red Monkey, sell for, I was in disbelief. I wouldn't spend a thousand dollars on a pair of novelty jeans. Actually, I'd have to be paid to wear novelty jeans. If we are talking basic, plain old jeans, then, the American brands have everyone beat. You can buy Levi's on eBay for under $20. A couple years ago I wore RL jeans.

Mine is another vote for Levi 501 Originals. During the right sales, I can still pick them up for right around $25 a pop! The fit--perfect; the construction and durability--pretty darn good; and the price--very, very reasonable!

for skinny and dark, I'd go with APC New Standard (about $150), Nudie Slim Jim or Skinny (around $200), or Earnest Sewn...same price.

www.apc.fr for the New Standard (I usually order one size down (the waist runs big))

www.bluebee.com for the Nudies

www.earnestsewn.com for the ES

thats curious. why should the waist on a $150 jean measure a whole size larger than stated on the size tag? on a $30 jean you might expect that.

Now in our Versace (not vjc) boutique very good discount (the last 50 %). Top line Versace jeans for 110 euros: dark blue, shiny and black steel labels and bottoms. Very elegant. I measured few and on Wednesday I'll have some free time for buying it. Gucci boutique selling for 350 euros.

I'm a 31 usually, for APC 30 is slightly big, 29 too tight, but I have a big booty from playing hockey, then again, that would be the same booty for all jeans...so I don't know. Some denim companies size their jeans differently.
