I thought I remembered reading somewhere here about not wearing stripe separates. I want to specify the rule on this. Is it not ok to wear a striped blazer with trousers/jeans, are striped pants fine by themselves? Does this only apply to suits?

Some will say that "striped blazers" are usually orphan suit jackets
That would be traditionally correct, DressPR, but there are a number of mid-range retailers in the US that are now selling pinstriped sportcoats, see, e.g. https://www.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=5171

Yeah, I know, they are supposed to be worn with jeans and the sort. Even designers like DG are advocating this trend, which I believe was partly sparked by a GQ cover featuring Johnny Depp, a couple of years ago.

However, because of the usual type of discussion at AAAC, I assumed Mr. Golem wanted to know about what the classic style "rules" supposedly say, and I went with that...

Ah, very sensible. I just was pointing it out because part of Golem's question was whether there was a distinction between wearing pinstriped suit jacket separates and wearing pinstriped blazers and I wasn't sure whether the blazer trend had made it to your neck of the woods.

As already mentioned stripes traditionally go together unless you're talking about morning dress: i.e. kennedy at his inauguration.

It is currently very fashionable to wear a striped jacket with jeans, especially if you are tall and skinny. Now if you are going to go ahead and do this I would suggest going to your local thrift shop. Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. will definately have a ton of striped suit jackets people have donated once the pants exploded. So you should have good luck and when the look stops being fashionable you will only be out $4.

Striped pants by themselves are not traditional nor fashionable at the moment. I think the reason is because a lot of women wear striped pants to make their legs look longer and slimmer and men are afraid to wear anything women are wearing at the moment. You'll see some men wearing striped pants but they are normally artists, actors, dancers, and other flamboyant individuals who aren't worried about wearing a "feminine" look.

So go ahead with the striped pants, but realize that to a lot of people it will look like you're wearing your girlfriend's pants. That is until 5 about years from now when it will suddenly be "high fashion."

Sorry, but the trend for men's striped pants has arrived. If you follow the Gap link I posted above and check their "dress pants" selection, four of the seven styles offered are pinstriped, two are glenplaid, and only one is plain. (I'll emphasize at this point that I don't like striped pants by themselves, I think they look incomplete, but given that the Gap is not at the bleeding edge of fashion, there's obviously some sort of broader market for these things.)

There's a practical reason not to wear striped odd trousers or jackets. Wearing one or the other emphasizes that the lines stop at the waist and cuts you in half. If you wear a striped suit, the lines go from shoulder to ankle, bringing a unity to your entire body.

I wear striped trousers all the time actually. I wear them to work too. Never realized that this was some new trend or anything. I just make sure that when I'm wearing striped trousers to wear a solid shirt. Who knows what people are saying about me. Oh well.

I fought the law and the law won.

I know I keep saying this, but I think the injection of pinstripes in pants and jacketsâ€"as well as the return of the sportcoat for younger man (i.e, those under 40). That is not meant to be agist, those of us under 40 have had to suffer "business casual" from about the start of our careers)â€" is part of a larger turn towards more traditional dress.

Lead me not into Banana Republic, but into a world of sartorial temptation.

Ah, but are you wearing those striped trousers with a different sport coat? That's the important thing here.

Ther is a distinction of stripes. Bold stripes meant to be worn as jackets, refered to in Engalnd as "Boating Jackets" are very proper. They show up from time to time and is an English classic.
Wearing a pinstipe suit jacket with jeans is a statement along the lines of a four in hand worn with a Tuxedo. Kind of the Hollywood look of the moment.
I like and have striped trousers but the stripes are novelty and would not be mistaken for a suit cloth.

Well, I keep a sport coat in my office just in case, but, generally when I am wearing striped trousers I'm not wearing a sportcoat. Though, I think that gray striped trousers can look pretty good with a black sport coat.

Two classic exceptions:
1. Seersucker is striped and need not be worn as a suit.
2. As already mentioned, striped trousers are generally worn with morning dress and also with strollers.

As far as I'm concerned, these two facts are enough to suggest that striped seperates are not terrible in principle. After all, why should one be allowed to wear checked odd trousers or sportcoats, striped shirts, anything one can think of on a tie, yet never stripes on an odd jacket or pants? I think the problem with "the look" as described is that it really does look like an orphaned suit coat and it's a form of fashion that draws a lot of attention to itself--generally not a good thing in a man's dress.

I wear two pairs of striped trousers. Both are very subtle and I think the effect is fairly conservative.

Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man.
