Doh, I just ordered this only to realize that the only download available is an exe file. Is there a Mac-compatible download available? I guess I incorrectly assumed that since the CD-Rom was PC/Mac, the download would be too.

Hi D4N, Are you able to download and extract zip files on your Mac? If so, I can tell Andy how to provide you with a link so you can download the Encyclopedia that way.

Best,
Mike

I don't think any action will be necessary, I transferred the exe file to a PC at work, installed it and realized that the exe just extracts to a folder of HTML files which I then just zipped back up and put on my Mac.

Thank you mikel for triggering me to do that, otherwise I would have just assumed it was an actual program that had to run.

One suggestion to Andy: Why bother with the exe file at all?

Anyway, I can't wait to start going through it, I've read many good things about it on here so far.

Why is it more expensive to down load than ship on a CD? It should be the other way around.

The prices are exactly the same! ?? But the "shipping" price will be going up very soon.

Quick question - have looked through some of the "teaser" pages and there don't seem to be many illustrations in the pages I've seen (e.g. shirt fabric weaves). Is this the case with the full encyclopedia also?

I don't think the teaser pages have any illustrations. ?? The Encyclopedia of full of pictures, illustrations, drawings, etc.

I was in a similar situation because I use Linux. What I wound up doing is the following : I have a windows Vista CD even though I don't use that Operating System so I just set up a virtual machine under Linux (virtualbox) to run windows under Linux (Host OS) and I extracted the .exe file in Windows (Guest OS) and then transferred the html etc.. files over to the underlying hosting Linux OS. I know Andy seems to claim that you can just simply request the .zip file from him but I wanted to be self-reliant. All that extra work for (jumping through hoops) me could simply have been avoided if there was an interactive option to choose to either download the file in .exe format or .zip format or if it was only offered in the .zip format. The zip file is universal but the exe file is not. Anyway, I think Andy's Encyclopedia itself was worth the money I paid for it.

Andy - have purchased and downloaded your encyclopedia and there's a lot of hard work which has been put into it.

I've one initial comment to make, that being that the background of the pages makes it very, very hard on the eyes after a while. I've changed it myself for my own copy (thank you HTML programming in college) but would strongly recommend you switch it to a non-patterned background.

As a second comment, end-on-end is more formal than broadcloth?

Just downloaded a copy - I don't know how I lived without it!

Extremely well written and very interesting.

dingbat:

Thanks! The background on the Encyclopedia was just a pick up of the website's background (the look of a fabric weave! ) and I thought it would be nice for consistance between the two. Changing it to white is worth considering.

And you're right about broadcloth being more dressy. Another revision!

Hi FalcomXtreme. We're working with Andy to port/convert his Encyclopedia of Men's Clothing over to PDF. Hopefully, we'll be able to offer it in that format in the next couple of months. Once that is done, it will be really easy to print it. Who knows, maybe we'll offer a print-on-demand service too and allow people who prefer to get hard copy to have it printed instead of downloaded Hmm - Good idea.

If this encyclopedia has minor updates, it would be nice for free download to those that have already purchased it. Just putting word for the future.
